The implementation of Jim Crow laws in Nashville and throughout Tennessee had profound and lasting effects on the city's African American community, shaping social, economic, and political structures for generations. The legacy of Jim Crow in Nashville is evident in various aspects of the city's history and culture. Segregated neighborhoods, schools, and public facilities, as well as the unequal allocation of resources and opportunities, continue to influence patterns of inequality and segregation in Nashville today. Additionally, the resistance and activism of Nashville's African American community against Jim Crow, exemplified by events such as the Nashville Sit-Ins of 1960, are integral parts of the city's Civil Rights Movement history and contribute to its legacy of resilience and struggle for justice. While significant progress has been made since the end of legal segregation, the legacy of Jim Crow remains a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges of racism and inequality in Nashville and serves as a call to action for continued efforts to address systemic injustices and build a more inclusive and equitable city for all residents. He inspired me when it comes to music and his legacy. One day I hope that my music will become my legacy. 3) How do you feel DEIB has evolved in our industry, and what further changes would you like to see? Diversity in nationality and sexuality where everyone understands each other. I would like to see more people in diverse backgrounds elevate, rise and get promoted. I’d like to see more people elevate in the company. 4) What accomplishments in your career are you most proud of, and how do these reflect your values or passions? I am starting to build my recording artist studio. I love music! 5) How does Ace differ from other companies you've worked for? The best part about Ace is the diversity. There are so many nationalities here and we all get along. It’s a chance to learn from each other and grow. 6) What advice would you give to Black and or BIPOC folks entering our industry today? Back in 2020, many of the more senior briefs we worked on specifically requested people of colour. Our advice then was that this would just be moving the few senior black/brown folk available between agencies. Your agency would be that little bit more diverse but it was a zero-sum game for the industry as a whole. More sustainable change would come from making Adland more open to a wider pool of talent and it is admirable that various schemes were developed to help improve diversity at the bottom of the pyramid. Four years is clearly too soon to see these cohorts in decision-making roles. However, It's disappointing that so many feel that any success seems not to have yet translated to significant opportunities for POCs to even make it to these more senior positions.

At Brixton Finishing School we've experienced this in the last 12 months, alongside many other #changemaking organisations, a #stealth defunding of commitments to #DEI leaving us with a budget deficit last year. We took this #crisis as an opportunity to reflect, reframe and recommit to our mission - to create fair, accessible industry access for all talents and to then support them to thrive, not survive when they arrive. Thank you to all who advocated for us - we really value and appreciate your efforts! #2024 is our year of serenity and we will not deviate from our mission - we will gracefully keep, keeping on, driving change. Talent is distrubuted equally but opportunities are not. To supercharge change long term commitment to impactful change making projects is needed. It’s vital that the industry leans in and support our (and other organisations) efforts. MEFA CEO, Naren Patel, decided to launch the Media For All [MEFA] awards when a recent survey indicated that businesses were experiencing “DEI fatigue” ; they were under so much pressure that diversity and inclusion were taking a back seat. #DEI departments have been disbanded at #tech companies (Source: WordinBlack.com) And by December 2023 open calls for divestment were heard - with Elon Musk declaring on X ‘DEI must Die’. Dear Industry, your busy day job is serving your clients and their consumers - our day job is supporting multiple communities with many intersectionalities to win at the world of work. So please, reach out to third party experts who can make authentic inclusion a reality for you - it’s not going to happen if it’s not a future proofed commitment.

The title of this NYT article says it all! The ad industry thrives on innovation fueled by diversity. Diverse teams bring fresh perspectives crucial for success. Yet, the lack of diversity in agencies, especially for Black talent, remains disheartening. In 2019, I launched Elevate, a leadership program for rising Black women talent. This year, I have had the honor of partnering on a new program focusing on elevating Black men in advertising. However, the industry-wide issue persists - a lack of sponsorship and investment in Black talent. Without sustained commitment, diversity initiatives falter when leaders championing these efforts leave or change roles. The recent news at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MIA) underscores the prevalence of toxic workplace cultures, even in revered institutions. It's a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and solidarity. 💼 Toxic environments thrive in silence, and it's crucial to acknowledge and address such cases to empower those affected and prevent further harm. No individual, regardless of their position, should be exempt from accountability, and leadership must be held to the highest standards. 📢 The dismissal of top curator Robert Cozzolino has sparked public outcry, with over 500 art professionals and artists voicing their support for him. Their testimonies shed light on broader issues of employee mistreatment and disregard for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access (DEIA) initiatives within MIA. 🛑 Transparency is paramount in addressing workplace grievances, yet MIA's leadership's reluctance to provide clarity raises concerns. Open dialogue and accountability are essential for fostering trust and maintaining the integrity of an organization. 🏛️ The arts community deserves institutions that uphold values of openness, creativity, and inclusivity. This week, I got to catch up with one of the most inspiring humans on this planet--Vanessa Morrison 🙏 AND I HAVE TO BRAG ON HER TODAY because I am filled with such pride for the leader she chooses to be. Over the past couple of years, Vanessa, Open Design Collective, THE ALLIANCE FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF OKLAHOMA CITY INC and the community came together to generate a Community Vision Plan for the South of 8th street. OCRA (Oklahoma City Renewal Authority) hired Open Design Collective in the summer of 2021 to lead this community engagement and master planning effort to help fill in gaps and have a focus on including Black #community member voices in the process. Their work culminated in a research report and an action guide, which provides recommendations for OCURA (Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority) to follow and implement through the redevelopment process. (You can find it on their website) The report covers: • #Black Culture: How can Black identity be thoughtfully preserved and revived in the focus area? • #Ownership: How can more opportunities for home and business property ownership, as well as the ownership over decision-making and process, be extended to the past, current, and future residents of this community? • #Land-use and Density Massing: What are the appropriate land uses and scales of development that will honor the history of this area and not repeat patterns of displacement? • #Connectivity: How can internal and external connections be strengthened so that community members can have increased mobility and access to needs and opportunities? • #Ecology: How can redevelopment happen with the environment instead of to the environment? SO MUCH INCREDIBLE CARE went into this project and it gives me chills to think about the thoughtfulness that Vanessa, her team, and the community made a priority in order to make the recommendations reflective of the community's needs and hopes.
