As part of a recent initiative by NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Equity and Inclusion, Wendy Garcia, over 600 recruits received basic ASL training on how to identify themselves as police officers, as well as how to determine types of emergencies being required by hard-of-hearing people. Might as well teach them sign language, you're not letting them arrest criminals. 🤷♂️
I can say first hand Commissioner Garcia is truly passionate about improving NYPD to making it inclusive for all.
This will be amazing for deterring crime! I can see the subway assault and robbery numbers shooting down as I'm reading this article!
What won't they require of Police Departments and Police officers? Maybe they can pull out a magic wand to solve all of society's issues, society's problems, society's Ills?-they want a Magician with Superpowers-Police officers are the "catch all" of society's deviations...then get highly criticized by their own Department's Management and Bosses when a "wrong" split second decision' is made-to be a Police officer today is to be afraid...of their own Department and it's daily repercussions
It's about time they should have been implemented this long overdue smdh 😒
Kudos Wendy Garcia for being a part of the diversity, equity and inclusion community!!!
This is sweet, the amount of times I approach a deaf/hard of hearing person and introduce myself with ASL when they are in distress….. makes me happy to help cause you see their eyes light up with relief. I’m happy PD done this. Finally……
Learning a new language is a fantastic initiative. 👏

3moI remember having a deaf complaintant that was robbed, I wrote down the questions I had for him and he answered them on the same notebook. Sign language training wasn’t needed.
