⚽️ Welcome to a New Era of Football? Last night, I went to the Baller League Final Four competition with Hamilton Bowler and Raynold Harris in Düsseldorf. The top teams in the German league faced off in this fast-paced six-a-side indoor football team and “Streets United” were crowned as champions. The night was filled with 30-minute long matches, musical performances, fun fan events, engaging sports commentary and tons of amazing moments. The arena was packed and it really felt like a modern version of football, especially compared to the Bundesliga. It was the most commercially American-esque sports spectacle I’ve ever seen in Europe. It was as if the Baller Leagued hired consultants from the NFL and NBA to create a new entertainment product. But there was also some of that true, authentic passion you find in European football. Die hard fans of all the teams were in the arena, with their own respective chants, bannners, and traditions - pretty impressive for a league that’s barely a year old. German football legend Kevin-Prince Boateng is the manager of a team and other famous footballers like Alisha Lehmann, Lukas Podolski, and Mats Hummels are involved. Brands like Samsung, Codafone and Nivea were sponsors - I can see why they view the Baller League as a potentially more impactful sponsorship than the Bundesliga, especially if you’re trying to reach a younger audience with better return on your investment. At the end of the day, Baller League is made for modern times and now I can see the vision. It’s made for the next generation, a league created specifically for Gen-Z and the TikTok generation. I came in unsure of what to expect, but am now very bullish on the Baller League and other modern variations on traditional sports. #sports #ballerleague #football #soccer #sportsmedia #sportsindustry #media #entertainment

Throwback to 2020 when we were promised a full-sized grass sports pitch and a space for the local boxing club when Dublin City Councillors agreed to sell-off two parcels of land at St. Teresa’s Gardens. The plan was for Hines to construct a full-sized GAA pitch for Gaelic football and hurling, which would also have been used for soccer and rugby. Although there are still plans to build a pitch, we cannot keep waiting for years and years – our kids need sporting facilities now. There are already 8,500 kids without a pitch and with the new housing developments, that number will just continue to grow. https://lnkd.in/eHsNr9Kq

Is this good for business? Sky Sports have just shown the percentage chances of teams winning the Premier League according to predictions by stats company Opta. Chelsea: 0.13% Newcastle: 0.22% Manchester United: 1.76% Liverpool: 3.55% Arsenal: 4.08% Manchester City: 90.18% We will see have accurate these predictions have been in May 2024, but the fact that they are so weighted towards one team doesn’t sit well with me. Think back to the days of teams like Leicester, Blackburn Rovers winning the Premier League. How neutral fans so wanted the underdog to win. Before that Nottingham Forest winning the old First Division (Premier League as it is now) and the European Cup (Champions League as it is now). Personally I think leagues where one or two teams are almost certain to win are boring. For products that sell themselves in the entertainment market, predictable outcomes are the last thing you should want.

The competitive nature of sports brings all together. Regardless of the background we originate from. As it relates to the sport of rugby there’s never been a better time to grow the sport in America and globally too. The 2023 figures paint a positive picture for community rugby with the sport now played by 8.46 million players across 132 national member unions, an increase of 11% over the 2022 levels. Emerging rugby nations and women and girls are the major drivers of new growth for the game, according to the Rugby World Cup. The National Rugby Football League is evolving rugby to shape the future of the sport internationally and in the U.S. As a truly global year-round premium professional sport with an evenly split male-female demographic, rugby has strong appeal and huge market potential in America. The NRFL is positioned to be the preeminent sport & entertainment rugby league globally by showcasing the best athletes on the pitch, utilizing world-class stadiums, and creating unparalleled content 365 days a year to the biggest sports audience in the world. This is not just a chance to create a new league - it’s a chance to create a whole new idea in American culture. We believe rugby is an idea whose time has come in the U.S. - a sport that is right in line with values like authenticity, sportsmanship, inclusion, community. The NRFL’s foundation and ownership will be rooted in these values. Rugby is played in over 120 countries with 877 million global followers and 9.1 million men, women and children regularly playing the game. Rugby in North America is poised for a fully professional sports league due to the enormous value and demand for premium content, availability of existing world-class stadiums, large domestic contact sport fan base, a pool of untapped rugby talent, and ethos and attributes of the sport. Steve Ryan is the Managing Director at the National Rugby Football League, and he joined me this week to tell me more. For more information: https://www.thenrfl.com/ LinkedIn: @SteveRyan
