Catalyzing Science-Policy Excellence in Africa & Global Health Security | Global Health Champion | Empowering Women in Science | Leadership Enthusiast #STI #GlobalHealth #SciencePolicy #WomenInScience
Reflecting on the impactful discussions at the recently concluded #AYGS has been truly inspiring. It was an honor to share the high-level panel stage, discussing the pivotal role of STI (Science, Technology, and Innovation) and STISA (Science, Technology, and Innovation Strategy for Africa) in accelerating the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). I want to give special thanks to the HSRC (Human Sciences Research Council), Palesa Sekhejane and our amazing moderator Fatai Aremu, and my esteemed co-panelists: Honorable Mahlangu, the High Commissioner of the Republic of South Africa to Kenya, brought impressive diplomatic expertise to the table, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and innovation in fostering regional economic integration. Mmboneni Muofhe, Director General of the Department of Science and Technology South Africa, for his thought leadership, sharing strategic perspectives on how leveraging STI can drive sustainable development and enhance Africa's competitiveness in global trade. Dr. Sultani Matendechero ‘ndc’(K), Director General of the Ministry of Health Kenya, showcased insightful leadership in highlighting the intersection of health innovation and trade. He stressed the need for coordinated efforts to address healthcare challenges and think through the next pandemic while promoting trade opportunities. Michael Mandu, an International Trade Relations Expert at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kenya, demonstrated expertise in trade policies and regulations, shedding light on the role of STI in enhancing trade facilitation and fostering economic growth. The rousing opening remarks by Sarah Mosoetsa (PhD), CEO of HSRC, set the tone for the conference, inspiring attendees to leverage their ideas and expertise to propel Africa forward. Today marks a significant milestone for AITPM as our members have overwhelmingly voted for a series of constitutional changes aimed at enhancing our governance structure. With a resounding 91.6% approval rate, these amendments reflect our collective commitment to evolve and adapt in service of our vision and strategic goals. The restructuring of the board to include five member-elected directors, representing each region, and the provision to appoint up to four additional directors, ensures a dynamic and skilled leadership. This change is designed to bolster our governance with diverse perspectives and expertise. Furthermore, the extension of the elected directors' term to three years and the relaxation of eligibility criteria for directorship are strategic moves to foster a robust and visionary board. The establishment of a Board Nominations Committee to manage the election and appointment process is another step towards transparent and effective governance. These changes are more than procedural; they are a reflection of our dedication to better represent and serve our members. As we implement these improvements, we are poised to navigate the future with confidence and a strengthened sense of purpose. So this announcement came out today regarding the #Baldrige Award Process. Click on the link to read the message from Dr. Laurie Locasio, Undersecretary of Commerce for Standards and Technology and NIST Director Key messages: 1. There will be an increased emphasis on resilience and long-term success. 2. There will be a refined set of criteria and simplified evaluation rubric. 3. Organizations will be eligible to advance to site visit stage based on recognition by other robust, rigorous recognition programs. 4. There will be increased recognition opportunities, such as "finalist" for the award based on earning a site visit or for having an impact on areas of importance to the organization or our nation. 5. There will be changes in award criteria, application, evaluation, judging, and award applicant feedback processes. There will be a new schedule and cycle time. 6. There will be a 2024 Award process incorporating many of these changes. My questions: 1. Is there going to be a process to build awareness of the Baldrige program? How will we attract these "proven high performers"? 2. Will the Alliance for Performance Excellence have any accountability for driving participation in the Baldrige program? Will organizations no longer have to be recognized at the highest level of an Alliance member program to be eligible to apply for the Baldrige Award? 3. How will the Baldrige program use interested stakeholders (Examiners, consultants, users of the Framework, etc.) to drive participation in a collaborative way?

Innovation & law. MVIP, FORPIQ (President), AIOT (Board), NCFA (Advisor), Lawyer and trademark agent
"There is no country that presents a broader, more comprehensive threat to our ideas, our-- our innovation, our economic security, and ultimately our national security. We have seen efforts by the Chinese government, directly or indirectly, trying to steal intellectual property, trade secrets, personal data-- all across the country. We're talking everything from Fortune 100 companies, all to smaller startups ..." (extract of a CBS News - 60 Minutes interview with the 5-eyes intelligence chiefs, available at: https://lnkd.in/eNTws5jT). Thank you CSIS Director Vigneault for once again (post CIGI conference) bringing this important topic on #intellectualproperty #research #IP #national #security to the forefront; a warning to be heeded by Canadians, including #business, small and large. Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of co-writing an article with Aaron Shull titled "With an unruly China, safeguarding intellectual property is vital to national security" that appeared in the Globe and Mail (see: https://lnkd.in/eC-dv5sF) and CIGI (see: https://lnkd.in/e6v9TdqV), and am currently in the works writing a new paper on this topic from a #tech and IP perspective. Be on the look-out! ⏰ National Security Guidelines for Research Partnerships, available at: https://lnkd.in/eKSFdc8q MVIP Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI)
#ICYMI: CSIS Director Vigneault had some important messages to convey last week at the ETSI Summit. Missed it? Check it out ⬇️
