Novartis or Roche - which one is better or in which one should I invest now? I have often heard this question from my customers. Without beating around the bush, it doesn't matter in the long run - since the early nineties, Novartis has performed 9.9% p.a. versus Roche's 10.27%! Nevertheless, there are always phases where there are large short-term deviations. Since January 2022, Novartis has gained 19.54%, while Roche has lost 34.07% - a difference of over 50% (stockpicking is still paying off and Alpha can be generated). If we look at the fundamentals, in tennis it would be "Advantage Novartis". In my view, this is already strongly factored into both share prices. It would not be surprising if we would see a reversal of this out-/underperformance (Novartis vs. Roche) in the next 1 to 2 years, as it has always been the case over the last plus 40 years. Where should Europe’s open strategic autonomy come from and how should Europe strengthen it? These were some of the questions debated at a panel on « La souveraineté industrielle européenne à l’ère de l’IRA » hosted by EURACTIV FR in partnership with Europa Experience on 24 November in Paris, with Elvire Fabry, MEP Aurore Lalucq, MEP Stéphanie Yon-Courtin, and Marc-Antoine Lucchini (Head of Foundation, General Medicines at Sanofi) as panelists. Great discussion and a clear sense of urgency for Europe to act more decisively, reinforce the single market, drive investment, and deepen understanding of value chains in critical sectors and the relative place of Europe in them. In the context of medicines, the need for Europe to not lose sight of how countries outside the EU are boosting their innovation capacities in biopharmaceuticals. And to drive understanding of a decarbonisation strategy as part of Europe’s global competitive advantage also for its health ecosystem.
