Which came first, TGIF or TGI Fridays?     With #TCOP moving downtown soon, I’m looking forward to the new activity it will bring, including revealing new third places for us to connect!🤝      Ever heard of a #thirdplace? I only learned the term a year or so ago, but it is the place where people spend their time outside of home (first place) and work (second place). Sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined the term and describes third places as the spaces where we exchange ideas, have a good time, and build relationships. On TV it's the Central Perk couch on Friends, or the place where everybody knows your name (Cheers). I’m a millennial, so my third places always seem to revolve around coffee.☕     Coffee Culture at UF, Spaddy’s Coffee Co. at USF, Distant Worlds Coffeehouse or Cafe Solstice in Seattle. Nowadays you can find me at Kahwa, Buddy Brew, or the upstairs break room on campus, grabbing a quick espresso with a dash of salted caramel syrup. These are places where I get to run into a familiar face and catch-up from our last run-in, or meet someone new and connect over our favorite ways to drink coffee, before going back to work or making the journey home for the day.      As a member of the Office of Student Affairs, I wonder about which places our #FuturePharmacists will choose as their weekly meet-up spot after a difficult exam or where they will pass the time while waiting out a Tampa afternoon rainstorm.⛈     So, where are your third places? A mini vacation with friends is the perfect way to strengthen the bonds in our cherished relationships and decompress from work stress. This weekend, our dear friends... who are like family to us... came to visit from South Florida and we all went to Busch Gardens. Busch Gardens is a fun theme park here in Central Florida. It's a cross between a zoo, gorgeous garden, and roller coaster park. One of those friends works for a hospital system who gave a discount on tickets. Months ago, we made a plan. We picked a day when we knew the weather would be decent and the park wouldn't be crowded. This weekend, we went. And it was the best day ever! Although I'm not a fan of roller coasters (like our friends are), I do love spending time in nature and with animals. As you may know, I'm someone who cares deeply about our environment and the life that it supports. Every single staff member there was wonderful, and the zoo keepers were exceptional. I got to have personal conversations with them and learned about how this zoo is a "back up to extinction." They shared the measures they take to ensure the continuation of the endangered species in their care. In fact, I was invited to come work with them and help with the Gorillas if I had an interest! I could go on and on about all the things that made this day trip one to remember. But for the sake of brevity on this post, I won't. Suffice it to say, it was a truly wonderful experience. There was something for everyone. Clearly, Busch Gardens is doing something right when it comes to employee engagement. After that, we spent the rest of the weekend enjoying each other's company: working in my garden together as a family, random karaoke-style dance parties in the living room, movie time, and all the things that make good friends become closer... like family. So if you're looking for a fun weekend idea that nurtures your cherished relationships and allows you to be a kid again, look to see what there is to do in your area. Then make a plan with friends and go for it. This post is a bit longer and personal... For the first time in my career, I have summer Fridays off for July and August. Some might wonder, "Great, but can you really take the time off?" At Conveyor Marketing Group, I can confidently say YES! The importance of recharging and achieving a work-life balance is often underestimated. While it's frequently discussed, it's rarely put into practice. It's crucial for employees to feel that taking time for family and recharging is valued. When employees can show up to work refreshed and motivated, they are more productive, efficient, and happy. So, what am I going to do with my summer Fridays off? I'm going to utilize every second and prioritize my family. For those who don't know, I’m a mom of four wonderful children. Yes, you read that correctly—four! Some fun plans I have include: 👯♂️ A long weekend getaway with my mom 🛍 Friday shopping with my sister, whom I used to see all the time but now rarely do 🏕 Being present for summer camp drop-offs and pick-ups 🏊♀️ Swimming 🎢 Taking my two younger kids to Dutch Wonderland on a weekday, avoiding the long weekend lines And so much more!
