The term heritage isn't just about historic buildings or important historical sites.  Think of somewhere like the beautiful Sycamore at Sycamore Gap (sorely missed, every day). Had that tree stood anywhere else it would just have been another beautiful tree. But because it was next to Hadrian's Wall it became a heritage site. It was one of the most photographed trees in the world, families have picnicked beneath it for years, couples have got engaged, families have scattered the ashes of loved ones. It became an asset to the local, regional, national and international community of visitors, a place of beauty, reflection, a destination. It was shared by society and should have been preserved for generations to come. Because that's what heritage is. An inheritance of something special from past generations, for our enjoyment, to be looked after and passed on to future generations. Unfortunately, with Sycamore Gap, the heritage will never be the same.  Heritage isn't just about historic buildings, but about how we interact with a site or a place.
