« rail freight needs to catch up with the new realities » 💪 Rémi Lebeda, Policy Manager at International Union of Wagon Keepers (UIP) takes to the stage at the 18th edition of the #RailwayDays by Club Feroviar in Bucharest on 17- 18 October. Focused on fostering information exchange of the newest trends and ideas, the event puts different topics under the spotlight such as #legislation, #financing, #modernisation, #digitalisation, #infrastructure and #rollingstock. Rémi Lebeda offered a perspective on the part that #railfreight must undoubtedly play in the future of logistics if we are to honour the #GreenDeal. In order to do it right, a radical change in operations & a more customer-oriented mind set is needed. From the fragmented rail network situation to dominant national factors to policy actions to digitalisation - the #transformation has many faces but only one goal: ensuring that rail freight becomes the 🥇 first choice for the environmentally-conscious and high-performance interested client. [French Rail News] The fate of Railcoop, the French rail cooperative, is being decided today. 🚄 The rail cooperative wanted to relaunch the Bordeaux-Limoges-Lyon train line abandoned more than 10 years ago by Groupe SNCF. A great project led by Nicolas Debaisieux and his team. We believed in it, because Railcoop was : - 15,000 members - 10 million euros raised - Second-hand trains found (a new train costs 18 million euros). The idea was excellent: to link Bordeaux to Lyon without having to go back via Paris, to open up the West and the East. In fact, this line should never have stopped. So why has Railcoop reached what its chairman calls a ‘treasury impasse’? 1) It has not found the funds to renovate the railway equipment. 2) Another barrier to entry is the reluctance of banks to lend to a cooperative. 3) A market of large portfolios: the entry ticket to open a rail market is between 500 million and 1 billion (source: Agence Transmissions / France culture). This explains why mostly the mega-operators who were previously monopolies, such as the Groupe SNCF, Trenitalia in Italy and Renfe in Spain, are opening up lines. ❤️ Whatever happens today, Railcoop will have paved the way for others, bringing the social issue of trains back to the forefront and demonstrating the public's enthusiasm for new lines. For that, we at Nightgoes say THANK YOU. Thank you for believing, persevering and fighting! We also wish good luck to the new entrants: 🇮🇹 Italo Treno – NTV in Italy 🇨🇿 Leo Express in the Czech Republic 🇫🇷 And in France, 3 players are starting up: ➡️ Midnight Trains is seeking funding to open its top-of-the-range lines in 2025 ➡️ Le Train Voyage should be creating lines in the south-west by 2026 ➡️ Kevin Speed will be investing in the north-east with 3 routes: Lille-Paris, Paris-Lyon and Strasbourg-Paris 💫 We hope these new players will also get the night train moving! #train #nighttrain

A consortium of companies has announced plans to launch a high-speed train service to rival Eurostar using the Channel Tunnel. The new service between Paris and London could start in 2025 under the name "Evolyn". Eurostar, currently the only company to offer this service, is a 55 percent subsidiary of French national railway operator SNCF. A spokesman for the Getlink group, which operates the tunnel under the Channel, says the company "has always had the ambition to have more high-speed traffic through the tunnel, whether incumbents or new entrants". Renfe, the Spanish national rail operator, had indicated in 2021 its aim to launch a high-speed train between Paris and London. And Getlink said last year it planned to buy high-speed trains to lease to rail companies interested in competing with Eurostar. Renfe is already operating a direct train between Barcelona and Lyon. The high-speed line between Paris and London allows connections between the capitals in two hours and 15 minutes through the Channel Tunnel. Presumably, with a rival company offering service, prices will come down. europeanamericantravel.com

Before anyone gets too excited about rail nationalisation let’s not forget that a) most passenger rail is already owned by the Department for Transport, and b) it was rail organised variation that triggered the very significant growth that brought us to where we are today. https://lnkd.in/eyfBW_3W Subsidiaries London North Eastern Railway Northern Trains Southeastern TransPennine Express

𝗟𝘂𝘅𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗴 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗰𝗼𝗹 𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲! As early supporters of the Luxembourg Rail Protocol, the Alpha Trains Group is delighted that it has finally entered into force. This is a significant milestone for the global rail industry. (photo: Informal meeting of the Railworking Group at the Innotrans 2022 hosted by the Alpha Trains Group) The Luxembourg Rail Protocol enhances legal certainty offering rolling stock lessors, lenders and investors a robust legal framework that mitigates risks, and increases the security of their investments. With its international registry, rights and interests in rolling stock will be recognised and protected across borders, giving us a stronger foundation for global operations. The positive impact of the Luxembourg Rail Protocol on financing costs, asset recovery processes and investor and lessor confidence is an important step forward in making rail transport an even more attractive and sustainable option for the future. We look forward to reaping the benefit of it under our futures financing transactions. #LuxembourgRailProtocol #RailIndustry #RollingStockLeasing #SustainableTransport #GlobalRail Howard Rosen CBE Laetitia Vauchez Simon Härle

Today Susanne Dirksen (Schavemaker Logistics & Transport, board member Rail Cargo information Netherlands and rail person of the year) and I, met Dorota van den Bercken (Economic Department NL Embassy in Poland). We discussed recent developments in Poland and the Netherlands regarding rail freight. And we emphasised the importance of the #EUYearofskills. Ambassador Daphne Bergsma provided us with a great quote ‘Changes are coming in the rail sector, as the most sustainable way of transport. Inspiring examples can be seen to scale down domestic flights and scale up high speed train connections! Your expertise, creativity and motivation are immensely valuable assets in making these changes happen. Use your energy and desire to change, jump on board and help us innovate rail transport.’ Rail Freight, The Future is Ours

A powerful rail network plays a crucial role in realizing the vision of a unified Europe. Freedom of movement between member states is one of the EU's greatest achievements, and the common rail network is an important lifeline for transnational mobility. The best example of this is the Interrail ticket, which over 600,000 people used to travel across Europe by train in 2022 alone. This would not be possible without a modern and well-developed high-speed rail network. Between 1985 and 2021, the number of high-speed rail lines in the EU27 member states increased almost twenty-fold. This refers to lines that allow speeds of more than 200 km/h. However, there is still a lot to do. Cross-border trips currently account for only 7% of the kilometers travelled by train. The EU plans to double cross-border rail traffic by 2030 and triple it by 2050. To this end, it is also supporting new international rail connections, such as from Munich to Rome and from Paris to Venice. Until the coronavirus pandemic, rail passenger traffic in the EU was growing year on year. After all, rail is one of the most sustainable, fastest and safest means of transportation we have. For this reason, expanding and modernizing the transnational rail network to further connect Europe - and its people - should remain a top priority in the future.
