First step in decarbonising your asset, let's capture the braking energy that we can, and increase the efficiency of the existing diesel-electric drivetrain, using this recovered energy and some green energy from other sources when available. From the health and safety aspect, even a small battery from ABB (with up to 10C) could be used for short moves without using diesel, which during vehicle maintenance activities, in buildings/enclosed spaces etc. means no emissions inhaled or needed to be extracted. Regenerative braking means less brake pad wear, and less particulates too, so there are other benefits.
Lithium is mined, and the problems often cited with adding Lithium is just that - how green is mining? Well, this first step, and subsequent steps start to impact this negative side effect of using Lithium too.
Second step, upgrade to an alternative fuel engine or a full battery system, by simply removing the diesel engine and adding the alternative power source - you can continue to use the components already purchased in step one and simply reconfigure with the added components, so the initial investment is not wasted.
