Discover career options beyond traditional employment You need to understand all your options before defaulting to traditional employment. Many doctors tend to follow the herd without considering alternatives. During training, you follow a set path: after your first year, you move to the second, then to the third, and finally, you graduate. This pattern continues into your career. Unfortunately, the current trajectory for doctors isn't always ideal. You might not realize this initially, but three to five, or even ten years into your career, you may find it's not the best fit. It's crucial to explore opportunities and solutions that allow doctors to build their careers on more than just traditional employment. I want to emphasize this to our audience today and discuss the various options available. Tod Stillson is a family physician and entrepreneur. Are you a physician who wants to transition into a non-clinical career, but your identity as a clinician is keeping you stuck? These 5 steps can help you loosen the grip of the physician identity. Step 1. Recognize how your physician identity resists change. The resistance might show up as procrastination, or tolerating a work situation that's no longer rewarding, or beating yourself up for not enjoying patient care anymore. Step 2. Appreciate how being a physician has served you. How have you benefited? What have you accomplished? Step 3. What new identity would you like to try on? Who do you want to become? What skills do you want to take with you? How do you want to live your life? Step 4. Take one small step and move into your new identity. Creating a new career identity takes time. It's not all or nothing: no matter what you choose to do next, part of you will always be a physician. Here's to your continued growth and evolution!

Physician career crossroads: Finding the right path after dissatisfaction I'll delve into the experiences I've had working alongside two remarkable physicians during their career transitions. This particular juncture in their professional lives often stemmed from a profound dissatisfaction with their current positions—a sentiment increasingly common among physicians today. They'd reach a tipping point, resolved to embark on a new path. They'd begin scouring job listings, fueled by a mixture of eagerness and trepidation. The sheer volume of options inundated them, leaving them uncertain about which direction to pursue. They'd wrestle with conflicting desires, questioning whether a seemingly promising opportunity was genuinely aligned with their aspirations or merely a leap from one challenging situation to another. Regrettably, I've witnessed instances where haste prevailed, and they hastily accepted offers, only to realize, six or nine months down the line, that they'd exchanged one source of discontent for another. These missteps necessitated starting anew, perpetuating the cycle of job transitions and the associated uncertainties. Diane W. Shannon, MD, MPH is an internal medicine physician and physician coach.
