Yesterday was International Women in Engineering Day – an opportunity to celebrate the many amazing women working in engineering across the globe, including in Australia’s renewables industry. Women represent around 39 per cent of Australia’s renewables workforce, which is higher than the international clean energy average, and much higher than the coal, oil and gas industries. That said, a 60 per cent male-dominated workforce is far from equal. Representation of women needs to be higher, especially in leadership and engineering roles. That’s we why we’ve teamed up with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) to launch the Grid Connection Engineer Graduate Program, an industry-first initiative for electrical engineering graduates. The program will offer learning experiences not available in other programs. By bringing together multiple employing organisations as hosts, grads will gain invaluable experience and new skills as they rotate through multiple work settings. Our first applicants are in place and we’ll be announcing the hosts shortly. We’re also gearing up to launch the next wave of our annual Chloe Munro and Australian Institute of Company Directors scholarships, which are part of our Women in Renewables program. These scholarships enable the professional development of women in clean energy, and we have a proud history of exceptional candidates and winners. You can hear from one of them, Sera Tarpis, Engineer at AEMO, below. We’ll be launching the next rounds of both scholarships at the industry-leading Australian Clean Energy Summit in July: https://lnkd.in/geQ5WsmY Australia is crying out for talented individuals to fill the many critical roles in the transition, ranging from engineers to developers, planning specialists, project designers, lawyers, environmental scientists and many more. We are committed to helping as many people into the clean energy industry as possible, which is why we run our Career Launcher program, through which students and recent grads who identify as women can be sponsored by companies to attend our events and network with the industry. Rebecca Neill, our Head of Project Development at Hygen Energy, says ensuring that more women are represented is crucial in creating an inclusive and innovative industry that benefits everyone. “Diversity of thought is a massive thing in engineering in terms of innovation and because you don't get to a positive solution if you all think in the same way. The more variety you can have in the room, the better the solution you'll get to in the end. My message to any female considering a career in engineering is that they can do anything anyone else can. It’s a great career as it’s varied and opens many doors. You can work in many different areas, and it teaches you some excellent skills, such as problem-solving, which can be applied to engineering and anything else.” #diversity #inclusivity #engineering #progress #HygenEnergy

Renewable Energy I Cleantech I Infrastructure Investment I ESG I Sustainability I Finance I NA I EU - at Farrell Associates
WHERE DOES #diversity STAND IN RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECT ENGINEERING? In a recent conversation with a hiring manager, we discussed the crucial need for diversity within their team, particularly in project engineering roles. Stats do show that fewer females are pursuing #STEM subjects, largely due to the perception of these fields as male-dominated. Even among women who do graduate in STEM, many do not pursue careers in the field. As a result, this significantly narrows the pool of diverse candidates available What's even trickier is that hiring managers often keep seeing the same candidates over and over again, making them think there aren't many options out there, especially when it comes to female candidates. We encourage hiring managers to prioritize qualities like adaptability and a willingness to learn. It's not just about years of experience; it's about finding people who are eager to learn and grow, regardless of their background or how long they've been in the industry. At Farrell Associates, our approach is all about innovative thinking and thorough research. While our process may take longer, we're committed to building a team that's as diverse as it is talented, and our success rate in finding the right fit is exceptionally high. I've emphasised the issue within project engineering, but I acknowledge that this is a challenge across the entire project lifecycle. #dei #diveristy #stemjobs #womeninstem #womeninenergy #diversityandinclusion #projectengineering #renewableenergy #renewable #projectlifecycle #energytransition #diversityrecruitment Neil, John, Stephanie, Matt

According to a study led by the University of Hull in 2020, 90.7% of engineers in the renewable energy sector are male. This is why, for Women’s History Month, we want to shine a spotlight on Elevate’s brilliant female engineers who have thrived in this industry despite the systemic odds stacked against them. Yasmin Harris-Boadi is our talented Electrical Engineer. She had always wanted to do something challenging and decided to embark on engineering following a friend’s encouragement. The field with its constantly evolving possibilities excited her, and she developed a particular interest in electrical engineering due to its renewable potential. She upgraded to a Master’s in Engineering during her second year of university because of her excellent academic performance. She then participated in a graduate scheme for two years before finally joining Elevate. As an engineer, Yasmin no longer looks at buildings the same way. Now whenever she looks at a building, her mind jumps to the functionality behind the walls: the multicoloured wires, the insulation, the pipework that transports hot water, the heating system—the building services that make it habitable. Engineering has made Yasmin more logical, as she applies the problem-solving principles of the industry to her daily life. It has also made her more disciplined and passionate about self-learning because engineering is a field where you learn on the job. Being aware of what goes on behind the scenes in buildings has heightened her enthusiasm for sustainability and drive to locate creative solutions to climate change. Lack of female role models and mentors in engineering were the biggest challenges throughout her career. It meant that she often didn’t have the confidence to speak up in meetings. With three years of experience under her belt now, Yasmin has gotten more comfortable with voicing her ideas and is looking towards project management as the next step. Pursuing engineering in itself has given her more self-confidence because she never thought that she had the ability to design complex systems and yet here she is, a key member of Elevate’s electrical team. ⭐ Her advice to aspiring young female engineers? ⭐ “Anyone can do it. Engineering is the future, and there’s lots of space for everyone.” #womenshistorymonth #engineering #womenengineers #womeninstem --- Find out more about our building services and how we support your journey to net zero: https://lnkd.in/dSpQMFcn

Celebrating International Women's Day 2024 👏 In honour of #internationalwomensday2024 , let's shed light on some insightful statistics and remarkable achievements of women in Geomatics/Land Surveying and Engineering in Canada. Did you know that the first known Land Surveyor in North America was a trailblazing woman? Alice Fletcher played a pivotal role in plotting Indigenous lands in the 1800s. Fast forward to 2016 - only 5% of Land Surveyors were women, and the overall percentage of women in the Geomatics profession stood at 37%. We've seen progress, but there's room for growth. According to Engineers Canada (2022), the current percentage of licensed female engineers nationwide is 19.2%, with a shared goal to elevate this figure to 30% by 2030. A collective effort to bridge the gender gap in STEM fields. While women constitute roughly half of Canada's population, their representation in STEM remains below that mark. Engineers Canada's 'Environmental Scan' delves into the contributing factors, unraveling both surprising and familiar challenges, including a prevalent 'boys club' mentality. https://lnkd.in/gJjNBwff A heartfelt thank you to the 19.2% of women in engineering and the 5% holding a Land Surveyor's license. Your contributions, resilience, and determination in fields where you're underrepresented make a lasting impact. You're the rockstar engineers inspiring future generations. And let's not forget the incredible contributions of women in STEM who've changed the game in Canada: - Donna Strickland, Wifi Technology - Sylvia Fedoruk, Medical Isotope Production - Elizabeth Dowdeswell & team, Canadarm - Dianne Jolley, ATM Language Interface - Maud Menton, Enzyme Kinetics leading to the development of the Pacemaker Together, we celebrate and appreciate the achievements of women in Geomatics, Land Surveying, and Engineering, paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse future.
