BDiSInsights: Last year, I shared a post questioning the business case of Beyond Meat, and recent developments (article in Dutch below) have further validated that skepticism: "Meat substitute manufacturer Beyond Meat has seen a significant decline in demand for its products in the first quarter of this year. Sales of the American company fell by 18 percent to the equivalent of 70.4 million euros." This serves as a stark reminder of the importance of evaluating business initiatives based on merit rather than ideology. While it's tempting to champion ideologically driven projects, the reality is that success always hinges on meeting consumer demands and market dynamics. Beyond Meat's struggles underscore the dangers of prioritizing ideology over market fit. This lesson extends beyond (sic) the food industry to other sectors, such as renewable energy, where ambitious projects face serious challenges, not in the least due to operational realities, or worse, a blindspot for efficient alternatives such as nuclear energy. As business leaders, it's imperative that we approach every opportunity with a critical eye and a commitment to evidence-based decision-making. Let's use this as a catalyst to reassess top-down initiatives and ensure they are grounded in sound business principles rather than ideological fervor. #BusinessStrategy #MarketFit #BeyondMeat #ConsumerDemand #RenewableEnergy #EvidenceBasedDecisionMaking #BDiSInsights https://lnkd.in/evXS7tGR

Last week, I had the opportunity to visit a food night at the "Food for Thought" exhibition at the Scheepvaartmuseum. A view of Kadir van Lohuizen on our food system and the role of The Netherlands. It was definitely Food for Thought! Being somewhat familiar with food systems, I still gained many new and surprising insights. So many aspects of food systems are interrelated and we all (government, industry, academia and not to forget consumers themselves!) have role to play to realise a change. 💡 90% of Dutch onions are exported and we import many, because Dutch consumers do not like too many peels around the onion and certain flavours. 💡 Fish caught in waters close to NL, but are shipped to China where the bones are removed and then shipped back. 💡Many vegetables in our supermarket are grown in Kenia and often also cut and pre-packaged there before being shipped. 💡 Mega farms with cattle for beef in US, at size beyond imagination. And farms in Saudi Arabia where cows need to be continuously cooled because of the hot environment. It sparked discussion. Is eating only local the solution, or will that impact economies of developing countries that rely on export? Although storage and transport of food is needed, is it from a global perspective not wise to select areas where production can be most efficient and sustainable? How about the need for drinking water, is making water from sea water the solution? How can it be made easier for consumers to adopt healthy and sustainable dietary choices? Etc, etc. And the role I can play? Ensuring that health and sustainability go hand in hand in the food (system) transition we have to make. And in the innovative environment of Wageningen University & Research, I know that my colleagues in other disciplines across the whole food chain are working on future solutions too.

We keep on fighting #foodwaste at Instituut voor Landbouw, Visserij- en Voedingsonderzoek (ILVO). For example in our project ‘Foodwaste scan’ ‘ Voedselverliesscan’ where we develop a digital tool to support companies in monitoring their food waste, together with Flanders' FOOD, FoodWIN, TooGoodToGo, OVAM , Fevia, the federation of the Belgian food industry, @agentschaplandbouwvisserij and @vlaanderencirculair. The Dutch Health Council / Gezondheidsraad advise on 'Healthy Protein Transition: Healthy protein transition: Shifting to a diet with more vegetable and fewer animal proteins is better for the environment and healthier for most Dutch people. The Health Council concludes this in an advice to the Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality and the State Secretary of Health, Welfare and Sport. Animal protein sources have a greater environmental impact than vegetable protein sources. Also, some sources of animal protein are associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases. That is why government policy focuses on the transition to more vegetable and fewer animal proteins, or the protein transition. The Health Council investigated the health effects of a diet with 60% vegetable and 40% animal proteins. In our current diet, this ratio is the other way around. https://lnkd.in/eDtpEcWA

When the industry doesn't provide answers, we must look for them ourselves! Fost Plus, Comeos and Fevia, the federation of the Belgian food industry claim that their proposition of #DigitalDepositReturnSystem is THE solution to the litter problem in Belgium. But so far, in spite of hundreds of thousands euros invested in pilot projects, the answers are still kept waiting 🤔. That is why our environmental NGO asked Eunomia Research & Consulting - a study bureau expert in circular economy and DRS - to make an assessment of the current DDRS proposition (which they name 'Serialized DRS'). Main conclusions of this in-depth report, this proposed system: 👉 Is years from being ready (certainly not for 2025) ⏰ 👉 Will exclude people (a.o digitally impaired, tourists, people in vulnerable positions) 📱🚫 👉 Environmental impacts will be way smaller than with the well-known classic system. That is, lower impact on #litter, high-quality #recycling, and compatibility with #reuse. 🌎 "The study has identified numerous problems, which make it clear that DDRS is a dead end. Wallonia and Brussels have already opted for a classic system. It is now important to work with Flanders to ensure a well-functioning nation-wide system in which points of sale give consumers their money back as they should" So Céline Tellier, Alain Maron, Zuhal Demir, let's make this real for 2025! Thanks Rob Buurman and Vanessa Debruyne for their contribution to this report 💪 . --- Our PR here: https://lnkd.in/ekPmZDyg Download the full report: https://lnkd.in/e3-AwqJQ Chris Sherrington (Eunomia) testimony: https://lnkd.in/eMjygkzN

Great news! The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) has been approved by EU ministers.
