This pair of twins, the double bundle of joy, were born at the Primary Health Center managed by Basic HealthCare Services, to a 21 year old woman living in a remote village. Nearest functional hospital where obstetric care is available is 100 kms away. Decentralised maternal care is essential to provide responsive and cost-effective maternal care. However, it is essential that primary care teams are skilled and supported; and have access to reliable transport and emergency obstetric care facility, should a complication arise. This NYT article highlights an alarming JAMA study that identifies a trend in hospitals acquired by private equity firms. Despite a minor decline in mortality rates (a good thing), there is a significant increase in patient complications, including infections and falls. This rise in medical errors points to a potential erosion in patient care standards and for me, brings to light the critical need for patient advocacy at the decision-making level in these PE firms. Incorporating a representative who can voice patient concerns on the board of private equity firms could be a pivotal step in ensuring healthcare decisions are made with patient welfare as a focus. https://lnkd.in/g5dyNjJS
