Did you know that over one-third of edible food in the US goes to waste? Much of this waste occurs within the retail and consumer sectors. In developing nations, agricultural food loss is largely due to inadequate infrastructure. But amidst these obstacles, there's hope! Innovation in preservation technologies like high-pressure processing and fermentation can extend shelf life, reducing waste. Plus, developing new extraction methods can create value-added ingredients, further cutting down on food loss. Supporting reduced consumption in overconsuming regions can also improve food security and reduce waste. Our initiatives for the effective management of close-to-expiration products, in collaboration with major Greek retailers AB VASSILOPOULOS, METRO AEBE (My Market) & Kritikos Supermarket S.A, are featured in the European Commission's report on reducing food loss and waste (page 16) as an EU best practice with tangible results in terms of food waste reduction through collaborative action and a cross-cutting approach.
