In my latest article, I talk about how SXSW EDU 2024 was successful in designing experiences for educators, and what we can all learn about professional learning. Too often, we keep saying educators (and I also mean principals, paraprofessionals, etc.) should take matters into their own hands, but force feed them one way of doing it. Similar to what we've seen with Edcamps and other spaces, we can create spaces where educators get to make choices based on what they need to learn and what they need to keep going in this work. I've been at XSEED Education for just over a month now, and it's been a whirlwind! Transitioning from managing one classroom to overseeing 25 schools across the state, working with over 80+ teachers, and indirectly impacting thousands of kids has been exhilarating. Initially, I thought I'd be walking into classrooms, ready to be wowed by every lesson. But what I've discovered is even more fascinating: it's not about making kids go "wow," it's about making learning click for them. Every day, I'm amazed by the simplicity and elegance in the way our teachers instruct—simple gestures, clear strategies, and breaking down concepts so every child can grasp them effortlessly. Teaching isn’t about flashy decorations or countless activities; it’s about the beauty of making learning accessible and understandable. Now, whenever I step into a classroom, I’m not burdened by assumptions. Instead, I’m excited to discover, "What new can I learn from this teacher today?" Because I've realized that the true beauty of the classroom lies in its simplicity and effortlessness.🪄 #Education #Learning #Teaching #Simplicity #Impact

Working in 'the tech industry' and especially in education, you're often drawn into the conversation around the place of technology in child development and whether it's a true help or ultimately a hindrance. Although its focus is on early learning, this guidance from the Office of Educational Technology feels to me like it's really got The Basics pinned down and can actually be applied to a wider spectrum of scenarios and ages. 🎓 Guiding Principle #1: Technology—when used appropriately—can be a tool for learning. 🌎 Guiding Principle #2: Technology should be used to increase access to learning opportunities for all children. 🤗 Guiding Principle #3: Technology may be used to strengthen relationships among parents, families, early educators, and young children. 👪 Guiding Principle #4: Technology is more effective for learning when adults and peers interact or co-view with young children.
