According to preliminary results, it secured 326 out of 650 seats at the House of Commons, garnering the necessary majority to form the government. The Conservative Party, meanwhile, went down in flames at the election. Here are the main facts of election results. Election fallout - The Labourists, led by Keir Starmer, have secured 326 out of 650 seats in the House of Commons, having obtained the majority necessary to form a new government. - The Conservative Party, ruling since 2010, currently has a mere 73 seats. - UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has recognized the Conservatives’ defeat and congratulated Starmer. - The Labour leader has vowed to carry out sweeping reforms in the country. - On Friday morning, Starmer should be received by King Charles III who will instruct him to form a new government. You may be amused to learn that the #British Parliament has a term limit until January 28th, 2025 leaving a likely parallel electoral experience next year. Winter elections in the #UK are as popular as a snowman in July, with Christmas campaigning hardly exciting voters. Therefore, brace yourself for a rare double whammy: the #UK and the #USA have been hosting general elections in the same year, a déjà vu since 1964. Remember October 15th, when Harold Wilson's Labour won by a hair's breadth after a 13-year-long Tory rule? On November 3rd, LBJ had a big win over Barry Goldwater. #Funfact: the current UK PM, Rishi Sunak, was not born until 16 years later… The worst part of the 2024 outlook is that where the UK has a likely Sunak versus Starmer competition, the US looks even less edifying with the possibility of a Trump vs Biden rematch. As I will not tire of noting, if one of the US gerontocrats stands, they lose but if they both stand, we all lose. #economy #business #election #government

In the end, the polls were broadly right: Labour has won a landslide victory, and Sir Keir Starmer will be the prime minister after 14 years of Conservative-led government. Yet dig a little deeper, and the data paints a complex picture. Labour’s national vote share is only around 2% higher than it was in 2019, despite gaining more than 200 seats. The Conservative vote has splintered in multiple directions, to both Reform and the Liberal Democrats, but there is evidence of tactical voting at play. After decades of infighting, populism and Brexit, the Conservatives are set to get a bashing in the next UK elections. Britain’s main opposition Labour Party is set for its biggest ever victory in next month’s general election, winning by a larger margin than in 1997 under former prime minister Tony Blair, opinion pollsters YouGov said on Monday. YouGov’s poll predicted that centre-left Labour would win 422 seats in parliament, giving them a 194-seat majority, while Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives are on course for their lowest total in more than a century. The Conservatives are expected to be reduced to 140 seats, according to the multilevel regression and post-stratification (MRP) poll which use big data sets and demographic analysis to predict results in individual seats. https://lnkd.in/eZwUGD4u

After 14 years of Conservative Party rule, the UK has now elected the centre left, perhaps more centre than left, Labour Party as government, and Keir Starmer as the new Prime Minister.
