Microsoft has launched a journalism initiative to address the growing crisis facing independent news organizations and to help preserve local journalism. Our team partnered with Microsoft to produce this video highlighting how their efforts have affected newsrooms in Mississippi, Northeast Wisconsin, Central Valley California, El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico. When I first saw this post, I was struck by the bit about interest in journalism that explores solutions not only problems because I wasn't sure how this is done, so I did a quick search and this is what I found:
💡 Solutions journalism is rigorous and compelling reporting about responses to social problems, which includes these key elements:
✅RESPONSE
Focuses on a response to a social problem — and on how that response has worked, or why it hasn’t
✅INSIGHT
Shows what can be learned from a response and why it matters to a newsroom’s audience
✅EVIDENCE
Provides data or qualitative results that indicate effectiveness (or lack thereof)
✅LIMITATIONS
Places responses in context; doesn’t shy away from revealing shortcomings
knowing this now I totally agree that we need more solutions journalism, not only to avoid feeling down after reading the news, but because I believe it can inspire more creative solutions to our problems by showing us case studies of similar problems, how others tried solving them, and what worked and what didn't.
As communicators, we can and should focus more on the problem-solving side of every story we tell.

Many of you know I started my career in journalism. Last week, I was doing research for an article and came across the Digital News Report 2023 from Reuter's Institute and Oxford University about the shifting news landscape. I've summarized the 8 main takeaways from my perspective, and ones that I identify with.
Declining trust in news organizations is alarming but not surprising since independent business models for news organizations are a thing of the past. Also, the fact that consumers want positive news and solutions rather than doom-and-gloom should be worth noting for communication professionals.

Safe Quality Journalism!
There is something off in our media eco system. Let's talk about it.
While 74% of brands adjust strategies to combat disinformation and support credible news, only 22% have a mandate to actively fund quality journalism. As the media landscape is changing to a digital era, new expectations have emerged for multimedia journalists. Not only are they required to have clear writing, fact-checking and critical thinking skills, but must utilize photo and video techniques for an audience that increasingly consumes news on mobile devices. I wrote about the benefits and drawbacks of this changing landscape in my recent post.

It’s a big year for politics - locally, regionally and nationally. The QT’s plans reflect that.
We can’t wait to get stuck in to the key issues affecting our region and hold the decision makers to account.
As an example, earlier today (on the excellent Politics North) Con Cllr Liam Bones suggested there needed to be greater scrutiny of - and challenges to - regional mayors. Noted.
That’s why we’re here. Whether it’s regional mayors or local councillors, The QT will look to scrutinise and challenge across the board.
We’re proud to be politically neutral and determined to encourage positive conversations with our politicians. Watch this space.

The QT is a new online media platform for the North East with a mission to deliver quality regional journalism.
Independent and politically-neutral, we will offer issue-led campaigning news, features and commentary that is free from political spin, media bias and social media toxicity.

"Traditionally, journalism has entailed a top-down process where the editors-in-chief or media owners assign the tasks and the employees are responsible for executing them. This means that the stories often highlight the community issues that are interesting to the newsroom and not necessarily the community itself. Basically, the community isn’t at the heart of the process and as a result, the stories might not resonate with the communities."

A key component to a healthy democracy is local journalism. But, it’s in crisis. According to the American Journalism Project, 2,500 newspapers have closed, 1,800 communities are without a local newsroom, and 60% of journalism jobs no longer exist. A decline in original reporting leads to a less informed public.
With digital disruptions and fast-paced news cycles, many media houses are adopting strategies to grab audiences’ attention:
- More negativity (“If it bleeds, it leads”)
- More “breaking news” alerts (even if it's not urgent)
- More stories (often of lower quality)
- More hard-hitting, sensational headlines
- More drama and conflict
But it turns out audiences don't love this.
How can you break the trend? How can #decisionmakers and #journalists move towards more positive, engaging reporting?
