I recently had a conversation with a colleague about our work in DEIB and it occurred to them that often when they engage in conversation about DEIB at work or in personal conversations all they hear are about the issues surrounding DEIB, and they rarely hear about solutions.
My reply: "What solutions do you propose for people to become more diverse, equitable, inclusive, and create a sense of belonging that people haven't already been saying for hundreds of years?"
Her reply: "That's a good question."
My reply: "No, I really want to know what you would suggest. LOL"
I think people that are truly interested in the work or incorporating DEIB in their personal lives, struggle with just the basics.
My recommendation is just to go up to people you don't know and ask questions, actively listen, and SPEAK UP! Speak up in the spaces where not only when we're in the room, but especially when we're out of the room. If history has taught us anything is that those who have been marginalized can't just be their own advocate. We need our ALLIES!
More importantly, we need true allies and that takes a lot of bravery! I truly want to thank the allies in my life who have been there for me, and spoken up for me not only when I've been in the room, but especially when I've been out of certain spaces because I'm not welcomed. Let's all continue this great work with as much grace and patience at the start of this new year!
