Today is World COPD Day! 🫁 The theme this year is "Breathing is Life - Act early." This can include preventing early risk factors like smoking, monitoring lung health from birth, diagnosing COPD in a precursor state and providing treatment promptly. 💓 Any patient that is admitted to our Respiratory Therapy program with a diagnosis of COPD (a cardiopulmonary disease diagnosis) is promptly assessed, monitored and therapies are designed based on specific patient needs to improve activity tolerance, relieve symptoms and improve quality of life. 🏃♂️ If you know someone with a cardiopulmonary disease, be sure to share this post with them! #WorldCOPDDay

Pulmonary embolism (PE) can trigger COPD exacerbation. In a study, 1580 patients with COPD hospitalized for respiratory symptoms were screened for PE with CT-pulmonary angiogram. PE was identified in 17 percent, with 11 percent having PE involving the main or lobar pulmonary arteries. Purulent sputum decreased the odds of PE by 60 percent. We image for PE in patients requiring admission for COPD exacerbation who do not have evidence of other triggers (e.g., infection or heart failure).
