What if we were all a bit more civil? In our current climate, fostering respect and constructive dialogue is crucial, both in the workplace and beyond. We know that individuals and businesses thrive when civility is embraced, which is why SHRM is starting 1 Million Civil Conversations. Let's make civility the common language that unites us all. #CivilityAtWork
I don't think we should expect people to be civil if they're being treated without Equity. This doesn't sit well given your announcement about burying Equity as a primary focus.
Civility without equity - no thank you.
Civility without equity only supports those in power. Who benefits from the removal of equity? Not the workers! DO BETTER.
A find a lot of things pretty amazing. Relationships and work and all the better personal and group pie charts and systemic improvements as defined through needs and KPI’s and tax designations or culture or national sovereign of sobering and yet bettering… Think of relativity and quantum. The measures and magnitude of understanding each part and their Values… yet increasing Value and understandings when also seen through the relation. That’s physics and math…humans are parts of that yet we are more… the fragging and defragging and optimizing of bridges… For instance… a boss employee relationship is not maternal nor paternal… yet caring and stake holder and engagement and all sorts of overlays exist… state department work is not maternal nor paternal either… The relationship, as long as it is of integrity and solutions seeking or at least… close enough to allow time and space for more balconies than basements… helps to thrive and reduce ambiguity and yet… increase efficacy and safety…. Leadership isn’t all vertical nor horizontal… the arcs and arches matter… These translations and health, climate and tools work helps. #LoveEVICTShate
Civility is critical to fostering mutual respect, effective communication and collaboration. HOWEVER, civility is an input, NOT AN OUTCOME. Civility is a pre-requisite for inclusive and equitable cultures. You can be civil, but not necessarily fair and inclusive. The shift to more palatable language in the DEI space only serves those who benefit from the current systems.
NPR had an interesting piece several years ago: "Civility as a Tool for Keeping People of Color in Their Place" (https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2019/03/14/700897826/when-civility-is-used-as-a-cudgel-against-people-of-color). From the piece: "So the relationship between alleged civilizers and the people they're 'gifting' with civility, Johnson points out, is 'inherently undemocratic, unequal and racist.'" Shame on you for removing Equity from your core values. Even with a focus on Inclusion and Diversity, there is no need to eliminate Equity unless you truly don't value it.
Civility without Equity only works for those in power. You might have forgotten to mention that 👋🏻
We love this initiative from SHRM! Fostering respect and constructive dialogue is more important than ever, especially in today's challenging climate. By promoting civility, we create environments where individuals and businesses can truly thrive. SHRM's initiative, "1 Million Civil Conversations," is a powerful step towards making civility the common language that unites us all. Let's all commit to embracing and spreading this essential value! 🌟 #CivilityAtWork #SHRM
I am currently witness to SHRM certified individuals, in academia, going out of their way to destroy an Asian immigrant (with a 40 year spotless record) to save a white tenured professor. They have supported this professor labeling the immigrant as a sexual predator, THE hostile work environment, a racist, a physical abuser, etc... all to retaliate against this employee taking part in protected activities. SHRM certified individuals are helping the tenured pile on, all but calling this immigrant a pathological liar. Does the SHRM cert mean you support the leaders at all costs or does it mean there is a responsibility to promote civility?
