We are inspired by the story of Phoebe Miles and her mission to continue her father's legacy of invention, creativity, and community-driven innovation from USPTO's most recent #JourneysofInnovation. Dr. James Cade's invention of Gatorade at the University of Florida, which originated as a solution to the effects of dehydration in football players, showcases the profound impact of innovation on sports, health, and society. A lengthy legal battle over product royalties in the 1970s was also responsible in part for the passage of the Bayh-Dole Act in 1980 that gave the public easier access to the fruits of university research. When we agree, we don’t need the law—a handshake is as good as a contract, and maybe better. Our leaders negotiate and reach reasonable conclusions. Dispues get worked out. The law is what helps us to live in the same society when we don’t agree. It’s never been more important than now. I’m looking forward to a lively discussion!

When training new hires in records management, I always emphasize how subtlety important accurate preservation of history is. In this example, if we didn't have on record how diverse the 19th-century West was we'd only have Hollywood depictions to rely on. An unreliable narrator at best!

Did you know that in 2022, tragically, over 49,000 lives were lost to suicide? Shockingly, a significant number were individuals aged 25-44, predominantly of Caucasian descent. This includes my father, a retired police sergeant, who, like over 50% of others, used a firearm to end his life. While there are interventions, therapies, and medications that can help prevent suicide, it's time we shift our focus. Let's open up conversations about adverse childhood experiences, the crucial nature of healthy caregiver attachment during infancy, and the traumas that precede joining professions like law enforcement. Do we need to emphasize the importance of discussing well-being, fostering healthy connections with peers, family, and spirituality, or reaching out to 988? Of course! As you share your present struggles, also bravely recount the challenges you have overcome in the past, no matter how many years have elapsed. As a suicide loss survivor, I strongly believe that together, through open dialogue and understanding, we can strive to prevent such heartbreaking losses. Jason M.
