It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Dr. Michael J. Marx, a revered figure in the coaching community and a relentless advocate for ethical practices and suicide awareness. Michael, an ICF Master Certified Coach, dedicated much of his career to business coaching and corporate consultation, primarily in Germany within Risk Management. He notably served as the leader of the ICF ‘Global Community of Practice on Ethics’ and contributed significantly on the ICF Independent Review Board. Michael’s passion also extended to his role as past-president of Christian Coaches Network International and as the author of ‘Ethics and Risk Management for Christian Coaches’ (2016). His commitment to supporting coaches on their spiritual journeys was evident through his leadership at Success Unlimited Network. Moreover, Michael founded Coaching Suicide Awareness, reflecting his deep commitment to mental health advocacy. He lived a life surrounded by the beauty of Colorado’s mountains with his wife and their 22 sled dogs, embodying his beliefs in a spiritual and connected life. As we mourn his loss, we celebrate his profound impact on our lives and the coaching profession. Michael’s visionary work will continue to influence and guide us. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and invite all who were touched by his work to continue his legacy of care and ethical integrity. #RememberingMichaelJMarx #CoachingEthics #MentalHealthAwareness #ICFCoach #SpiritualJourney

Regardless of your opinion of the author, this highlights the power of our environment and how much it influences our self-perception. Take the environment we were raised in for example: Generally, our parents didn't want to see us hurt, disappointed, or discouraged. They wanted to protect us. They wanted us to take the path that best-guaranteed success. Safety and security in every sense, physical and non-physical, was their #1 priority. Unfortunately, an unintentional consequence of being raised in that environment is the development of a fear of failure. So, we focus on what could go wrong, instead of all of the great things that could happen. We think, " I can't do that," because that's what we've been taught our whole lives. We were raised to have imposter syndrome. How much is that unintentional consequence still influencing you to this day? Fortunately, it doesn't have to be permanent. Recognizing that it was a learned behavior and not just "who you are" is the first step. Because it was a learned behavior, it **can be unlearned**. This is exactly what coaching can do. What would be possible for you if your own self-perception no longer got in your way? Coaching worked for me and it will work for you. #impostersyndrome #selfperception #confidence #comfortwithuncertainty #coaching #CPA #publicaccounting #awareness #personalgrowth

What a great image for resilience. Let us take your team out to start laying the groundwork or take advantage of our personal coaching. #Resilience #PersonalGrowth #ProfessionalDevelopment #GrowOut #MentalHealth #SelfCare
Last week I had the honour of being invited to part of the training BC Society of Transition Houses was putting on for PearlSpace. As a board member it was great to see the engagement of staff, and to better understand some of the challenge’s they face every day in the valuable work they do. The day that I attended they were discussing trauma and violence informed care. I have learned and taught this from a leadership perspective, but not from a care provider perspective. It was truly inspiring to witness and hear about how the team provides unwavering support and empowerment to individuals who have endured experiences that may be beyond our comprehension. They demonstrate a remarkable commitment to nurturing their resilience and ensuring that these experiences do not define them. As a board member, sitting there, listening, and participating at times, my biggest concern was for the staff. What kind of self care were they doing? How can I support their own mental health needs while they are supporting others? This was also discussed in the training, with individuals sharing how they practices self care; however I still feel like I as a board member can do more. I will continue to educate myself, though my studies, Verdant Consulting, and workshops offered through Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada (CPA Canada), FEI Canada Vancouver Chapter, and CPHR BC & Yukon. Do you have any additional suggestions Allessandria Polizzi, SPHR, PhD or Deborah Rosati FCPA, FCA, ICD.D, GCB.D, CCB.D? A powerful nature image shared at the workshop was the picture of fireweed. To me this image truly represents resilience. It is the first plant that grows after a forest fire, weaving the groundwork for the rest of the forest to come back. I’ll leave an image of it here, for you to reflect on things you have overcome. What groundwork have you laid to be resilient? Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Strategist. Bestselling Author of Reconstructing DEI and DEI Deconstructed. They/Them. LinkedIn Top Voice on Racial Equity. Inquiries: lilyzheng.co.
Chapter 7 of #ReconstructingDEI reveal: Address Conflict and Harm. Even successful #diversity, #equity, and #inclusion work that builds equitable systems doesn't end the possibility for harm; it only reduces it. And conflict—disagreement, argument, competing needs, and so on—is a reality of the human condition. Leaders and practitioners need to get skilled at navigating both. 🌱 Exercise 25: Listen to Understand teaches active listening, the most critical starting skill to addressing conflict or harm. You'll learn four types of active listening skills, practice responding to situations involving conflict or harm, and brainstorm ways to regularly train your active listening muscle in your own day to day experiences. 🌱 Exercise 26: Manage Conflict introduces you to the many different ways you can approach the conflicts you encounter. You'll explore the 5 different conflict styles—avoid, accommodate, compete, compromise, and collaborate—and dive into the nuance to uncover when and how you might use each style effectively, before putting them all into practice. 🌱 Exercise 27: Repair Harm offers an alternative to blunt, punitive, and ineffective ways of addressing interpersonal harm. By learning to center the needs of those harmed and flexibly working to make things right, you'll dramatically expand your understanding of accountability and transform empathy, humility, and problem-solving into restoring broken relationships. 🌱 Exercise 28: Unearth Root Causes teaches you to trace back the symptoms of harm back to their systemic roots, and gain the understanding you need to turn small-scale restorative practices into large-scale transformative ones. By diagnosing root causes, you'll be able to strategize about just what "systemic change" needs to target, address, and fix. Of these four exercises, which stands out most to you? Which do you feel like will be most valuable to your personal learning journey as a leader and a practitioner when the book comes out in November? Share your thoughts in the comments; I'll be sharing more sneak peeks and insights based on what folks are most excited to see!

I often get asked "how can I work with you?" And I generally reply "however you want to." 😆 That's the cool thing about how we work together is that we DON'T have to fit inside a box or do what's always been done. You will never find me inside a clammy or sterile office ~ we can hit the beach, the Cafe, meet online or hang at my beautiful rural place. Even my in-person courses and PD workshops are held offsite from your office and always have to have a view and delicious food. We do REAL life together, outside of the norm ~ whether you're after 1:1 personal coaching, professional supervision, an ongoing course or a one-and-done workshop, I've got you! ✨️ DM me and let me know what YOU need to support your healing and learning journey. 1moI’m so heartbroken with this loss… We had wonderful conversations with Michael, since the first day we met him. He was the first to introduce us to the US back in 2019 and had great analogies that stayed in my mind. Finally, I had the chance to meet him in Amsterdam in person last summer and enjoyed a glass of beer in a hot summer day in the Spui. Sending my heartfelt wishes to his family and loved ones. RIP my “Mr. Ethics” 🙏🏻
