Client: "We've been searching for this Software Engineer for 4-months" Me: Interesting- why could this be? Client: "We want them to come onsite everyday and we're located 1.5hrs outside of Berlin" "Oh and they need to have worked with JavaScript, Python, .net, C#, Java and be good at DevOps" "And speak German!" Me: Ok, have you considered this person may not exist? It's highly likely that if you've been searching for someone for a SE position for longer than 4 weeks there could be a problem with your requirements. With this client I initially advised best course of action is to pinpoint the tech they will work with on a daily basis and search for these people. If your office is located outside of a major city or hard to travel to consider searching for candidates to work on a remote basis or who could come to the office on a less frequent basis. Most of the time if your struggling to hire you have to look internally and see what could be going wrong, whether it be the processes, requirements, salary or work location. If there is ONE tip I'd give to junior engineers applying for a startup job ... –––– Contribute To Open Source Software (OSS) –––– Why? ⚒ Solid evidence that you are a builder – Your contributions show that you can write production-ready code easily testable and understood by other developers. This is basically not your first rodeo, you have done this before. 📞 You can communicate, collaborate and present your ideas in a written format Your pull requests and code reviews demonstrate your ability to articulate complex ideas clearly and concisely. This is one of the most impactful skills I notice in great engineers. 🐞 You can investigate & debug hard problems Solved a long-standing bug in an open-source project using systematic debugging, and documented the process – You are evidence-based, you don't just skim the surface and throw theories at problems. 👨🏻💻 You can read through, navigate large codebases and contribute reliably – Knowing your way around big, complex codebases only comes through doing this many times over and helps you be impactful, fast! 📝 You can take & and give feedback with an open mind – You can't work alone, at least most of the time, and being able to give & take feedback will take you so far in building credit & trust in your team(s) #hiring #softwareengineering #softwaredeveloper
