The same people who would have teachers fired and students expelled for quoting the N word in literature or from publicly promoted rap songs (but only if they are white or Asian) tolerate real, genocidal hate in the name of "tolerance," "inclusion," and free speech. UPenn, Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, UC Berkeley and UCLA--too many universities and academic institutions to count have shamefully tolerated blatant anti-Semitism, hatr, intolerance in the past few weeks from students, staff and faculty members. WHY IS THAT?! Friends--perhaps we, you have been played? Yes, our good intentions have been played, taken advantage of. Anti-Semitism should not be tolerated anywhere. Anti-Asian, anti-white, anti-Islamic, anti- anyone rhetoric and acts should not be tolerated anywhere. Not even, especially not, because someone claims that the denigration, the hate, the exclusion, the discrimination is done for a good cause. Good cannot come from evil. When someone tells you to do or tolerate or accommodate something that is obviously wrong for the "greater good," it is almost a sure sign that you are dealing with Orwellian level manipulators or useful, often self serving, fools. We can, together, make it all stop.

Fewer than 50% of Canadians get palliative care in the last month of their lives. Globally, 56.8M individuals need these services. Yet compassionate, accessible palliative and end-of-life support remains out of reach for many. This World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, we contemplate the intersection of personal experience and policy-making when it comes to these necessary health services...and why it's so essential Canadians have universal and equitable access to palliative care. We continue to reflect on the Gaylord Anderson Memorial Lecture that Sandro Galea, dean of the Boston University School of Public Health, recently gave at our school. As with all his writing and speaking, Dean Galea engaged us with his intelligence, humor, and rigorous adherence to facts as he reviewed the state of health in the U.S. and our field's response to COVID-19. Although we did a lot of things right during the pandemic, Dean Galea also talked about how we faltered. He offered a better way forward and suggested that as public health professionals, we need: 1. Epistemic humility (to be humble about what we know and don't know) 2. Radical compassion (to understand far better the real burdens people face) 3. Reform through reason (to act boldly to reform the system, but be pragmatic and bring people along, no matter their politics)

She will address health professionals who often find themselves at a crossroads of medical decision-making, religious coping, and spiritual discernment. When our patients and families are focused on trusting the divine and hoping for a miracle, how can we best support them?
