🌎 Yesterday, I returned home from an international work trip where I ran an advanced training up-skilling local government officials. It was one of easily over 100 similar trips I have been on in the past 10 years in various roles. If I took the U.S. Department of State's travel advisory for said country at face value, I would reconsider traveling there all together due to high levels of crime and corruption. 🌋 What I actually experienced was a beautiful, seamless trip. The participants were some of the hardest working I've ever met, the facilities were gorgeous, and I enjoyed the local culture without ever feeling unsafe. Most importantly, the work I did there was immediately impactful. It enabled the LEO's I worked with to move their financial crime investigations forward. It was a small but critical step to building a safer financial system for billions of people. 💙 Tigran Gambaryan, however, did not get a joyous homecoming like I did. He's been forcibly held in a foreign prison since Feb. 26th. That's 92 days. 92 DAYS. (For perspective, the high temp in Atlanta that day was only 62* and Beyonce's "Texas Hold 'Em" was Billboard's No. 1). I don't have all of the intimate details of the situation, but I am dumbfounded that a resolution cannot be reached without keeping a U.S. citizen who served for a decade as a Criminal Investigator detained in a foreign prison where the conditions are presumably.... I can't bring myself to really think about it. For any former FLEO who made the jump to private industry for the chance to have a bigger impact, the messaging is clear: we're on our own, any former service doesn't matter, there is no cavalry. I've written all of my Congressional reps as well as his, I suggest you do the same via usa.gov/elected-officials. With a new Government, I now start to get asked by everyone “what are your expectations?”, “isn’t great that we now have minister that believes in xyz!”. My advice for everyone now is to take a deep breath and wait. The lesson from 2010 is that the whirlwind of the first few weeks doesn’t last for long. Politics and policy are complex and laborious, no simple slogans will solve that. Let’s wait for the civil service to brief them, for the civil servants to understand what the new direction of travel will be and then engage where we can help, challenge where we disagree. Let’s meet the new politicians, explain how we can help, explain how our needs will help them meet their policy goals. But let’s not rush into anything.

"The addition of Nigel Farage’s voice adds intrigue, personality, jeopardy, excitement and anger in roughly equal measure." If intrigue, personality, jeopardy, excitement and anger is added, why does that matter? Another way of asking that question is to ask why do news reporters and commentators think these are important? The answer seems to be that much news reporting has long ago given up the ghost of reporting on news factually or objectively as a means to provide relevant information and analysis, and become rather more concerned with being just another form of entertainment as a means to provide emotional thrill and other reaction. So, it may be that intrigue, personality, jeopardy, excitement and anger matter a great deal, but surely only because those who deliver the 'news' have chosen to extol these qualities rather than other qualities (such as being informative, insightful or truthful). https://lnkd.in/gnYYtahe

My entire life experience has led me to this pivotal moment. Our challenges aren't confined to housing, climate change, policing, immigration, the NHS, or local government. Increasingly, people realise that to secure our collective futures and restore confidence in our politicians and Westminster party politics, we need a radical upgrade and reset of our 17th-century system of democracy. Are we a truly representative democracy when a minority of votes, say 36% as predicted for Labour currently, can deliver overwhelming parliamentary majorities? What would an improved democracy look like? How would it work, and what are the best alternatives? Is the balance of power between the executive and citizens appropriate? Do we need to devolve more power away from Westminster? Can our current system of democracy meet the essential challenges of the climate emergency, the global financial crisis and the collapse in public trust in democratic institutions and policies? These are just some of the critical questions we need to address. As an eclectic group of activists and community organisers who have never previously worked together before, such as Clare Farrell and Nick Gardham are coming together to explore our respective struggles, strategise, and engage in this crucial conversation. The outcome is we all agree that our separate struggles are, in fact, one struggle. To help communities face the enormous challenges confronting both people and the planet, we now need a new politics that is grassroots, ethical, accountable, and capable of forging a new democratic reform movement. The ideological dogmatism of the 20th century must be abandoned in favour of what works. Intolerance is increasing as a consequence of a profound empathy deficit. We've witnessed the culture of global businesses lobbying MPs and Ministers, leading to unprecedented political corruption. Our first-past-the-post voting system is now an obstacle to progress on various hugely complex issues. The future is arriving fast, and we are spectacularly unprepared for it. I can't say for certain that this approach will work, but I can tell you that when ordinary people come together and have the information they need, they can change the course of human history. With apathy on the rise and many ordinary British people feeling angry, confused, and dispirited, we have chosen to offer new ways of organising and leadership accountability in the absence of any realistic and credible alternatives that aren't mired in the old-school way of doing things. Perhaps we are all dreamers, but we are not the only ones...

To make the meaning of GIGO more explicit, I propose this schematic: GI (garbage in)---> COMPUTER--->GO (garbage out). We can assume we know what garbage is, I take it. We can also assume we know what it is for garbage to be "going in", or can we? What about garbage going in to the White House? Congress? City Council? The School Board? When I speak of garbage going in to the White House, I don't mean one of those guided tours available to the public, as Google informs me, "White House "White House public tour requests are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and must be submitted through a Member of Congress and their Congressional Tour Coordinator. Consistent with prior practices, public White House tour requests must be submitted a minimum of 21 days in advance and no more than 90 days in advance of the requested tour date(s). Reservations cannot be accepted for tour dates outside this 21 – 90-day window. Public tours are typically available from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, excluding Federal holidays or unless otherwise noted. If your tour is confirmed, please note that you will be assigned a specific time. All White House tours are free of charge. The White House tour schedule is subject to change, with little notice, based on inclement weather or official use. If you are a citizen of a foreign country, please contact your embassy in Washington, D.C. for assistance in submitting a tour request." https://lnkd.in/gMiMJxzK No, these kind of tours of the White House are not where the GI (garbage in) comes in. To the White House. I honor that this isn't where the GI comes in to the White House, because this is a democracy. Just look at this, how democratic it is. The tour is free-- now that's democracy. The very openness of the White House to such tours is distinctively democratic. Did Gadaffi allow tours of his lavish house? Does Netanyahu now? But we do in the USA, unless otherwise noted. GI (garbage in) does go in to the White House. The way I see it, though, democratic principles have nothing to do with garbage going in. The corruption of democratic principles, however, does. This might be called: GI--->GI(computer)--->garbage splattering all over the dang place.
