#Seagrass is probably the most important plant that the world doesn’t know about. Seagrass meadows store up to 18 percent of all the #carbon held in the #ocean – despite occupying only 0.1 percent of the sea floor. Yes, that's me in the seagrass meadows in #NusaDua, #Bali. I was amazed by the sight of the lush green underwater meadows that stretched for miles along the coast. These seagrass beds are not only a habitat for #diversemarinelife, but also a powerful weapon against #climatechange. #Indonesia is the world’s richest in coastal #bluecarbon ecosystems, housing around 3 million hectares of mangroves and 0.3 million hectares of seagrass meadows. The carbon stored here – 3.14 billion tons in mangroves and 0.39 billion tons in seagrass – is of global climate significance, and under serious threat. Unfortunately, Indonesia has lost 40% of its mangroves in the past three decades, mostly due to aquaculture development, coastal development, and pollution. To reverse this trend, Indonesia has launched several initiatives to conserve and restore its blue carbon ecosystems, especially in Bali. One of them is the #BlueCarbonProject, which aims to protect and rehabilitate 500 hectares of seagrass in Nusa Dua by 2025. By implementing these initiatives, Indonesia can #harness the potential of its blue carbon ecosystems to support its climate mitigation efforts, as well as its economic and social development goals. I hope this post has inspired you to learn more about blue carbon and how you can support its conservation and restoration in Indonesia and beyond. Together, we can make a difference for our #planet and future generations.

🌍 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒: 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚’𝐬 𝐋𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 🌿 On this World Environment Day, we turn our gaze to the vast African continent, where the rhythm of life is intertwined with the land. This year’s theme, “Land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience,” resonates deeply with Africa’s challenges and opportunities. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮? Africa’s landscapes are diverse, from the lush rainforests of the Congo Basin to the arid Sahel. But they share a common thread: the delicate balance between human activity and nature. Unsustainable practices have scarred the land—deforestation, overgrazing, and poor agricultural methods have taken their toll. Yet, hope blooms in the resilience of local communities, conservationists, and visionaries who strive to heal the wounds. 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: A Call to Action Land restoration is not just about planting trees; it’s about reclaiming ecosystems. In Africa, this means rehabilitating degraded land, replenishing soil nutrients, and fostering biodiversity. It’s about empowering farmers with sustainable practices that yield food without harming the earth. It’s about reforestation, protecting watersheds, and safeguarding wildlife habitats. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: Africa faces the specter of desertification—a creeping advance of arid lands. But resilience is in Africa’s DNA. From the Great Green Wall initiative spanning 21 countries to community-led efforts, Africans are fighting back. They’re building check dams, practicing agroforestry, and embracing drought-resistant crops. They’re turning adversity into opportunity. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗲: Amplifying Voices As environmental advocates, we have a vital role. Let’s amplify the stories of African heroes—the women planting acacia trees, the youth restoring wetlands, and the scientists mapping out green corridors. Let’s celebrate the Maasai herders who protect their grazing lands, the urban gardeners reclaiming vacant lots, and the youth who stand up for our next generations' rights. Together, we can inspire action, foster collaboration, and ignite change. 𝘑𝘰𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘞𝘰𝘳𝘭𝘥 𝘌𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘋𝘢𝘺, 𝘭𝘦𝘵’𝘴 𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘈𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢’𝘴 𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘥. #Why_design_conservation_models? Designing a conservation model that fosters rural livelihood growth requires a multi-pronged approach. Here's a framework to get you started: 1. Assess and Understand: Local Context: Analyze existing natural resources, agricultural practices, and traditional ecological knowledge in the area. Identify community needs, aspirations, and existing challenges related to livelihoods and conservation. Biodiversity: Evaluate the local flora and fauna, including endangered or threatened species. Understand the ecological interrelationships between the community and its environment. 2. Collaborative Strategies: Sustainable Resource Management: Promote practices like agroforestry, contour farming, and rainwater harvesting to improve yields while conserving soil and water. Encourage responsible use of forest resources like non-timber product collection (ecotourism, medicinal plants) alongside reforestation efforts. Ecotourism and Conservation Enterprises: Develop nature-based tourism opportunities that showcase the unique environment and cultural heritage of the area. Support community-managed conservation enterprises like craft production using sustainable materials. 3. Capacity Building and Market Access: Skills Development: Provide training programs on ecotourism management, product development, and business skills for locals. Foster knowledge sharing and capacity building among community members for sustainable practices. Market Linkages: Connect rural producers with fair-trade markets and eco-conscious consumers for their products. Facilitate access to microloans and financial services to support local businesses. 4. Monitoring and Evaluation: Track progress: Regularly monitor the social, economic, and ecological impacts of the conservation model. Adaptive Management: Be prepared to adjust and improve the model based on collected data and community feedback. Additional Considerations: Equity and Participation: Ensure all community members, especially women and youth, have a voice in decision-making and benefit sharing. Policy and Governance: Advocate for supportive policies that promote sustainable practices, fair market access, and community-based conservation efforts. By implementing these strategies, you can create a conservation model that fosters economic development, improves livelihoods, and protects the environment for future generations in rural communities.

We believe in taking actionable steps towards a sustainable future, and that's one reason we took out a sub with Carma to plant trees. It's great to see our small contribution build over time! 🌳🌳🌳 So far, this has led to the planting of more than 500 trees, removing around 169 tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere. We get to see where our trees are – it's good to know that they are helping reforestation in Mozambique, Madagascar, and Kenya. Plus, we opted to add some UK trees, helping fund new tree planting to support local biodiversity. It's so simple to do – a quick signup to a subscription and a sense of satisfaction. Carma is dedicated to making environmental and social impact simple and affordable, enhancing communities through reforestation and work projects. 💚 We love being part of creating a greener future. 🌍 Visit carma.earth and join us in supporting Carma’s mission! #Sustainability #Reforestation #GreenFuture #ClimateAction #trees
