Nearly 5% of families with children who have food allergies experience food insecurity, defined as a “lack of consistent access to sufficient food for an active and healthy life”. Food allergies are a significant burden on families. This is one of the reasons I’m so passionate about accurate diagnosis, to prevent unnecessary restriction, and prevention, to reduce avoidable burdens. According to the article, “After adjusting for age, gender, race, ethnicity, health insurance and ZIP code, the researchers found that children with a physician-diagnosed food allergy were 2.21 (95% CI, 1.22-3.98) times more likely to have food insecurity than those who did not have a physician-diagnosed food allergy.” Preventing food allergies through introducing commonly allergenic foods, including peanut containing foods, starting at around 4-6 months of age is effective and safe. Healthcare providers need to do more to educate and empower parents to prevent food allergies. If you see families managing food allergies in your setting, make sure you are screening for food insecurity and providing referrals for resources including SNAP, WIC, and more. https://lnkd.in/gumBK_tY #foodallergies #foodinsecurity #healthequity

Allergy Awareness Weeks Food Allergy Awareness Week is a week of learning, loving, and connecting with the whole food allergy family. It is an annual event that aims to raise awareness and funds for food allergy research, education, and advocacy. Food Allergy Awareness Week 2024 will take place from May 12 to May 18. There is also a similar event called Allergy Awareness Week, which will take place from April 24 to April 28 in 2024 Auditor actions if an undeclared allergen is noted: Undeclared allergens can be present in a food product due to a number of causes. Common causes that the auditor should consider during the audit include: • An incorrect allergen declaration on the label or on the product specification supplied by an ingredient supplier • The food business is using out-of-date or incorrect ingredient information to determine their allergen declarations • Cross-contact from shared food equipment, staff, or cleaning equipment • Lack of effective segregation between allergen-containing and non-allergen-containing ingredients or products in storage or display • Uncontrolled changes or modifications to recipes in-process • A lack of information or communication between food preparation and serving staff • Labelling errors. In allergen-related deficiencies a level of professional judgement and risk assessment is called for from the auditor. If the auditor identifies a critical systemic error in the business that could lead to a threat to public health (such as anaphylaxis or other serious health reactions), the auditor must liaise with the department to discuss the best course of action. The notice to the authorized person of the food premises should describe any failure to declare allergens that has been detected, specifying the time in which it must be remedied. #FoodAllergy #FoodSafetyKnowledge #FoodSafetyAudit #FoodAllergyAwarenessWeek #AllergyAwarenessWeek

SCIENCE SOLUTIONS TO FOOD ALLERGY - FOOD ALLERGY AWARNESS WEEK: Food Allergy Awareness Week 2024 will take place from the 22nd of April until the 28th of April. Last year we saw two amazing scientific breakthroughs in the fight to combat food allergies. DETECTING - with paper microfluidics and a smartphone. Hope for the future for food hypersensitivity suffers. As researchers investigate a new technology to combat foodborne risks. Traditionally detecting allergens in food products has been a complex, lengthy and costly process. A process often carried out in a laboratory. This pioneering approach using Fluorescent carbon quantum dots combined with aptamers, which are short, single-stranded DNA or RNA molecules that can bind to specific target molecules with high affinity and specificity. It opens up the possibility of world where food manufacturers, distributors, and consumers alike can easily identify and mitigate allergen risks, from the processing plant to the kitchen table. The developed sensor could have a significant impact on public health and consumer confidence. One day they could be simple handheld devices that can carry out the analysis through using a smart phone and the Internet of things. TREATMENT - The FDA approves the first drug to prevent severe food allergy reactions. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved the first drug to treat people with potentially deadly food allergies. Xolair, an injection, is now available to adults and children 1 year and older to reduce risk of severe allergic reactions to foods, the FDA announced in a news release. Xolair, the brand name for the drug omalizumab, is intended as a safety measure for allergic reactions to accidental exposures, not immediate emergency treatment. At last we have another option for keeping our food hypersensitive consumers safe and minimising their allergic reactions to foods in accidental exposures. Oral immunotherapy can help build resistance to a food someone is allergic to. There is no cure for food hypersensitivity, consumers must continue to avoid food that may cause an allergic reaction.Food Business Operators will have to continue to adopt best allergen management practices to protect their food hypersensitive customers. It is marvellous to see science, providing some of the solutions to helping those people who have food hypersensitivity. #IST #Allergen #Allergies #FoodScience #FoodTechnology #Analysis #FoodIndustry #FoodManufacturing #Retail #FoodService #Hospitality #Restaurants #Nutrition #Health #PublicHealth #FoodSafety

#Foodallergies are increasingly common in today’s world, affecting households worldwide. Many of us know someone allergic to prevalent foods like peanuts, eggs, fish, or milk. But do you know how a food allergy occurs? It happens when our immune system wrongly identifies everyday food proteins as harmful, triggering protective responses and the release of inflammatory chemicals like histamine. Even minimal exposure can lead to severe allergic reactions. Curious to learn more? Check out this enlightening article featuring Dr Kirti Chadha (Chief Scientific Officer & Senior Oncopathologist) at Metropolis Healthcare Limited, discussing the role of food allergies, testing, and the body's reactions. #FoodAllergies #HealthInsights #MetropolisHealthcare #ExpertTalks #MetropolisScientificExpert #AllergyTesting #Allergy https://lnkd.in/dhgGGiCs Dr. Nilesh Shah Vishal Wadhwa Mohan Menon Dr.Shibani Ramchandran Adarsh Jeyasingh Balakrishnan Ashish Sahdev

More than 1 in 20 people have a food allergy. The Food Standards Agency recently completed a study that found 2.4 million adults (6%) had a clinically confirmed food allergy. Peanuts, tree nuts (e.g. hazelnuts, walnuts and almonds) and fresh fruits were found to be the most common allergens. Contrary to popular belief, milk and fish allergies were found to be the least common allergens. However, the research also showed that plant-based allergies were growing. Over the past few months, I've touched on food allergy misconceptions quite a few times, but as we enter the new year I feel as if it may be time for a refresher. While there's certainly been a push for more literacy surrounding the topic, there are still too many instances of bullying amongst our children and misunderstanding that circulate amongst adults. The more we discuss the truth about food allergies, the more we can erase these situations and more. Douglas H. Jones highlights the 11 major myths that haunt this industry. However, I would challenge categorizing #5, "Small amounts of allergenic foods are safe," as a myth. While it's true that "for individuals with severe allergies, even trace amounts of allergenic foods can trigger life-threatening reactions," it's also true that for the majority of people living with mild or moderate allergies, trace amounts of allergenic foods WON'T trigger such a reaction. Understanding the severity of your allergy, and your threshold is essential for living a life from a place of freedom, not fear. #FoodAllergies #AllergyDiagnostics #VC #Healthcare #Misinformation
