Why do we so often die badly? How does it happen that so many of us arrive at the end of life unprepared for the journey? Somehow, we are stumped when it comes to creating a better model of dying. In “Solving for X at the End of Life,” published on Next Avenue, Executive Director of OATS from AARP Tom Kamber posits a better approach to death and dying. Instead of end-of-life experiences consumed by countless distractions and the imperatives of medical institutions and funeral homes, Kamber envisions pathways to dying as a time for growth, reflection, and deep connection. Connect what matters to your healthcare goals and plans!
Today, we celebrate "What Matters to You?" Day (WMTY) 2024. Inspired by a 2012 New England Journal of Medicine article titled "Shared Decision-Making: The Pinnacle of Patient-Centered Care," written by Michael Barry and Susan Edgman-Levitan, WMTY is intended to shift the power to the person who knows best about the help or support they need, whether it be a person with a medical issue or the clinicians or staff providing care. This international day of celebration aims to encourage and support more meaningful conversations between caregivers who provide health and social care (including family caregivers) and those they are or will care for in the future. The new Advil ad, as seen on believemypain.com is crucial in addressing the historical injustice of medical bias towards Black individuals. Historically, doctors have often ignored Black people's pain, falsely accusing them of being drug addicts rather than providing the necessary care and empathy. This ad appears to illuminate this troubling issue, urging healthcare professionals and society to acknowledge and rectify these deeply entrenched biases. By challenging these stereotypes and advocating for equitable access to pain relief, this campaign is vital in raising awareness and fostering positive change in the medical field, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their racial background, receive the care and respect they deserve. #Advil #BelieveMyPain #EquityInHealthcare

Creative Director, StoryMine | Video stories created for health and science organizations | Stories that teach and transform
We worked with Dr. Punch and his team on a video project on harm reduction and opioid use disorder. The work their team is doing on bullet related injury at The BRIC is completely inspiring and in Dr. Punch's words "radical." Watch this short video (not by us, but great!) to quickly learn a bit about what they're doing.
Watch and share this inspiring video highlighting the transformative work of Dr. LJ Punch and the Bullet Related Injury Clinic (BRIC), a grantee of the Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education (powered by The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention). Located in St. Louis, BRIC is a community-based clinic that empowers individuals and communities to heal from bullet injuries. Founded by trauma surgeon Dr. LJ Punch, the clinic offers trauma-informed, accessible, and culturally competent care to gunshot victims and their families. The Center has invested nearly $7 million in community-led research, innovative health approaches, and promising interventions to protect the health and safety of our most affected communities. Stay tuned as we spotlight more grantees in the coming weeks and months!
