The benefits of transitioning to renewable energy are much spoken about, but the work involved to facilitate the transition is a topic we see far less of in the news. This is an interesting read from Arup. The skills required to facilitate this change are in extreme shortage and an issue our engineering companies need to address as a matter of urgency. The sourcing of talent is just the start of that journey but how we track the talent and attract them when they are ready to move is a key to hiring great people into our industry.

Our 2024 Zunz Lecture, held in partnership with the University of Technology Sydney, explored how Australia’s transition to renewable energy will reimagine our energy grid. We brought together a cross-industry panel with diverse perspectives to discuss the renewable challenge and opportunities from a government, science and engineering, energy provider and operator, First Nations and consumer perspective. Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte, NSW Chief Scientist, laid out the complexities of unlocking the renewable energy sector and transforming the grid, encouraging industry to embrace uncertainty: “A renewable and decarbonised future for Australia is now less certain than it was in 2020, and that is a good thing. With rapid technology advances in battery storage and solar, we now have a plethora of options to build a renewable industry.” Missed this years’ event?
