TUFH & Woods System of Care Symposium November 9, 2023 7:30 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. EST   Speaker: Sailaja Musunuri, M.D., Chief of Psychiatry and Executive Vice President of Integrative Medicine at Woods   Across the globe, there are 200 million people with intellectual disability and 75 million with autism, many whom experience significant barriers to care and health disparities. In addition, many people with intellectual disability and autism also have other co-occurring conditions, including mental health diagnoses and other chronic conditions, which further complicate their health status. Thus, the symposium will outline the need for integrated health services to improve health outcomes for these populations, the barriers to accessing care, the need to expand the healthcare workforce, and an example of an integrated care service delivery model implemented by the Woods System of Care in the United States, which can be replicated through partnerships elsewhere in the world. I read a book a few years ago called "The Illusion of Evidence-Based Medicine" by Jon Jureidini and Leemon McHenry. It highlights the need for individual critical analysis of clinical research to examine the robustness of the findings. It was an excellent book. This quote from the below article is quite alarming:- "the gravest claim made by Pigott and his team was that 931 patients who were included in the trial did not have documented evidence of depression by blind assessment (using the HAM-D)". The STAR-D study is one of the most cited and taught studies about the use of antidepressants in treatment of depression, the results claimed 67% patients were in remission at follow up - however, this article suggests signficiant flaws in the study that may undermine the efficacy of its reported results. Psychiatric medicine is more heavily scrutinised than any other field of medicine, it also poses implications for broader mental health professionals.
