We’re a few months into the school year, and it’s never too late to have conversations about technology and set intentions for device usage with your children. 💬 Many schools assign devices like laptops or tablets, which students are responsible for taking care of (and using safely) the entire year. 💻📱🤳🏻 If this is the case for your family, it’s important to consider the role that device will play in your home. Setting boundaries and establishing trust is key to creating healthy digital habits. 👌🏻 Here are some questions to consider as you set boundaries around school-issued devices with your family: 📲Where in the house will we use the device? 📲Where in the house will we charge the device? 📲What apps do we agree can be used on the device? 📲Does your child need to ask permission to use the device? #BackToSchool #Electronics #Boundaries #DigitalHabits #DeviceSafety

What rules does your school have for cell phone use? How is it enforced? Our friends at Common Sense Media just released a new report on youth phone use and the results are, unfortunately, just what we'd expect. Kids are on their phones at all hours of the day, at school, at home. Fortunately, they've also developed a lesson plan for teachers to help students understand how tech is built to draw their attention, and how they just might be able to ignore those 237 notifications they get today. As educational institutions continue to navigate the challenges of managing screen time, phone pouches are emerging as a practical solution to help students stay focused and present in the classroom. By limiting access to phones, these pouches serve as a tangible solution to restrict phone usage during class. By curbing access to mobile devices, educators aim to cultivate heightened engagement and attentiveness among students. Have you seen this trend in action? Getting smartwatches and smartphones out of schools is a no brainer– or more accurately, a “yes-brainer.” Personal devices disrupt teaching, learning, and relationship-building. As a former teacher, I understand the desire to add a point to a gradebook to get kids to put away phones. But this is such a waste of time and energy– a teacher should not be responsible for policing student devices, and students should not be bringing devices to school in the first place. The wave of change is upon us– schools that don’t move to ban student personal devices will be left in the digital dust. #parenting #parentlife #earlyeducation

Schools grapple with the impact of smartphones on students. A complete ban can leave students feeling disconnected, but unrestricted access can be distracting.
