#ruffaroundtheedges - FITTING IN - Part 49 Ruffaroundtheedges and continuing to weave all the themes together over the last year that I have explored and have been able to capitalize upon with the help from Leanne Kinde, and this interesting reflection that Leanne brought to my attention. I intend that often I am helping people who do not seem to fit in or maybe a little misfit in their prior careers or prior thinking. And that goes further to talk about when I look at a problem or situation. I come at it from a “no box thinking” point of view or, you know, how do the misfits fit into something that fits? You see “out of the box” is structured by the box, no boxes mean no limitations in your thinking. Jumbled words there, but, hopefully, you get my drift. A part of my legacy is helping people who may be unable to fit in to fit in or figure out where they belong. I can resonate with many thoughts Arnold Schwarzenegger raises in this interview. Especially to accept challenging moments, failures, losses and tensions in life and between people in order to fulfill your potential and to develop as a human. It basically starts with educating your children. If you only strive for the comfort zone and allow no challenges or explorations where you could fail, the children will not be prepared what life throws at them later on. Falling, Standing Up, Feeling the discomfort in order to know what comfort really means. Are we willing that our children and ourselves are stressed in order to feel relaxed, feel tension to be relieved, to fight in order to enjoy peacefulness and so on? My opinion is that we need to accept much more that we will definitely fail at times, feel uncomfortable, realised that we took the wrong path or struggle in life and then to also speak openly about it and accept what is. Everyone faces their trials and tribulations. Arnie is right: Our Kids need to get prepared for the world outside the comfort zone by experimenting, trying, exploration, jumping. Brightsights 634 : Unpredictability is the flavour of life which makes it worth it. When you yourself don't know what is going to happen, it piques your curiosity. This in turn helps you to make the most of the things that you have. There will always be something more to be done and achieved. "Are you doing ok today? Everything alright in your world?" I was drum major at Boise High School back in the day (super nerd alert!). In addition to conducting the band on the field, it's one of the better leadership experiences available to students because you have to provide a lot of the motivation and establish culture for the group. And man, I learned a lot about that stuff. Leadership is - like many abstract concepts people get all romantic about - largely just a collection of skills and behaviors which can be learned and improved upon. I still remember an instructor Bill Humbert at drum major camp one summer. That was a life-changing experience, but one particular trick stuck with me. He said that most people don't show up to be assholes. So when you've got that kid who is screwing around, not paying attention, talking, and generally detracting from the whole band, don't go and call them out. Ask them "is everything ok?" There's basically two options. One: the kid is just being an asshole. This approach makes him feel bad that he's being a jerk and you are being kind, which will make him straighten up in a non-defensive way because you didn't call him out and start a confrontation. But the other scenario is that the kid is out of it because something is going on outside of school/work. Many, many times I have been pissed off at a coworker who is not with it and I want to call them out. But when I follow Mr Humbert's advice and ask what's up, I find out their mom is in the hospital or they had to put their dog down or something. Every time, I think about the landmine I almost stepped on and how I got saved from causing potentially permanent damage to my relationship with that person. Meet people where they are. If someone is slacking off, ask them if they need help with anything. It'll either guilt them into getting in gear or they may open up and give you a chance to offer support and change their life for the better.
