Road transport continues to be a major source of particulate emissions, made up of both exhaust emissions and non-exhaust emissions (brake, tyre and road wear) 🚗🛞💨 We ran 10 pilots with industry partners to capture tyre wear at the source and work with leading research institutions to fill knowledge-gaps for future policy. Without tackling tyre wear, transport will never become zero-emissions. 🪼Around 78% of microplastics polluting the ocean come from tyres. The connection between cars – even electric cars – and microplastics in our ocean is strong. Cars emit two types of pollution – the first is tailpipe emissions, from traditional combustion engine vehicles. Electric vehicles, including ours, emit zero from the tailpipe. ☁ The other type of pollution is Non Exhaust Emissions (NEEs) – emitted from wear on the vehicle components, mostly from tyres and brakes – the one that flows into our oceans, and our lungs. All vehicles emit NEEs. A recent study from Emission Analytics found that pollution from NEEs can be over 1,000 times worse than combustion engine exhaust particulates. Tyres release ‘toxic tyre dust’ which makes its way into our oceans, harming humans and wildlife with chemicals like lead and 6PPD. 6PPD is acutely toxic to many fish, including salmon. Shockingly, there are currently no emissions standards for NEE-causing components, but we follow our own compass. These NEEs are proportional to vehicle weight so we’re building the lightest possible vehicles which means we can use slim tyres, reducing our tyre particulate emissions. We even use our motors to brake, to drastically reduce our brake emissions. Info from: 🗞️ https://lnkd.in/e4DBxZKi. #ParticulateEmission #NEE #Zeroemission #Hydrogen #PlasticFreeSeas #OceanPlastic

Thought this very interesting. 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰: Published in 2020, study shows tire particulate wear emissions were 1,000 times worse than exhaust emissions. (https://lnkd.in/gmTntrzZ) And, in related WSJ article, "According to the Environmental Protection Agency, cars emit only about 1% of all direct fine particulate matter in California, and most of those emissions come from older models." Increasing smog and pollution, fluctuating fuel prices, and environmental concerns - there are many reasons to increase fuel efficiency in both passenger and commercial vehicles. One of the best ways to do this is by reducing vehicle weight. Lighter transportation methods mean consumers use less fuel, resulting in cleaner air and reduced dependence on irreplaceable fossil fuels. Simply put, vehicle lightweighting makes good sense. Protolabs - Europe have compiled a learning paper around this subject, covering plastic alternatives, weighing up the manufacturing options, and more.
