McKinsey & Company Senior Partners never really set out to write books, but sometimes their work becomes a lasting legacy. Ever so often, a sustained body of their work gives us a chance, in McKinsey Global Publishing, to consider developing a particular 'Insights to Impact' publishing stream into a physical book, one that will also endure the test of time. That 'book' decision often only comes after an intense internal introspection and review process by Firm leadership. We then seek out the world's top publishers, inviting their interest in the idea; our ambition to deliver a cogent narrative in terms of durable frameworks, powerful data and compelling storytelling; and the promise a McKinsey book offers to potential readers--often concentric circles of overlapping business and business-adjacent audiences globally. My McKinsey colleagues Carolyn Dewar, Scott Keller and Vik Malhotra, among our Firm's best "CEO Counselors," teamed up to write "CEO Excellence: The Six Mindsets That Distinguish the Best Leaders from the Rest," which the Scribner imprint of Simon & Schuster competed to publish, and did so in March 2022. In the past two years, the book has become a global bestseller, making The New York Times, USA TODAY, Los Angeles Times, Publishers Weekly and (the unfortunately now discontinued) The Wall Street Journal best-seller lists. It is still in its hardbound physical edition, having sold over 161,000 copies (including audio and e-book) and has been/is being published in 15 other languages worldwide. I just finished reading Cal Newport's latest book, Slow Productivity – a refreshing take on managing knowledge work sustainably.  Here’s the 3 main principles: 1. Do fewer things: Focus is key. 2. Work at a natural pace: Rush less, achieve more. 3. Obsess over quality: Excellence over volume. It's not just about doing less, but doing it better and at a pace that feels natural. Unconscious bias affects our organisational performance – whether we realise it or not. Our brains are constantly filtering, sorting, and using shortcuts to handle the overwhelming amount of information we receive each day. And those shortcuts are often where unconscious bias slips in. How to compete successfully Having read many books on competitive strategy, I’ve often seen references to Michael’s Porter’s seminal book, Competitive Advantage, written in 1998. I’ve always thought it would be a helpful read. And although I expected it to be dry and academic, I decided to give it a chance. Michael Porter is a highly respected Harvard Business School researcher, advisor, speaker, author and teacher. Competitive Advantage outlines the three categories of competitive strategy that Porter and his team discovered among successful companies, and how to make them happen.
