💡 Did you know that the first languages of North America trace back to two distinct Siberian language groups from 24,000 years ago? A new study by UC Berkeley linguist Johanna Nichols, published in the American Journal of Biological Anthropology, used linguistic typology and statistical analysis to trace the evolution of these languages. By comparing and organizing languages based on shared criteria, they uncovered patterns that link early North American languages to their Siberian origins. The findings show how these ancient languages shaped the linguistic landscape of Canada, the U.S., and Mexico. 🇨🇦🇺🇸🇲🇽 This research highlights the deep roots and interconnectedness of human language—a mission we live by every day.
