For more than ten years, Ms. Viju Daka lived in the peri-urban area of Burton in Zambia, facing daily struggles to #access water. Imagine living without a steady flow of clean water for a decade. It's a reality for countless people. However, Viju's life has transformed thanks to the support of Zambia's Southern Water & Sewerage Company (SWASCO) and WASSER FÜR WASSER (WfW) – WATER FOR WATER (WfW). "I am very excited to have a direct household water #connection for the first time in 10 years. There is water all day because before this, we would only have water available for a few hours, and on some days, there was no water from the kiosks we used to draw from. And now the pressure is always very high. This is a great project, and as a resident of Burton, I am pleased," says Viju. Her story is a testament to the incredible impact #sustainable water solutions can have on communities. It's not just about water; it's about #dignity, health, and the promise of a better future.

For #UrbanOctober we’re sharing an inspiring initiative by sanitation stakeholders in Kabwe, Zambia that promises to make a profound impact on both the community and the environment. By implementing scheduled desludging services to empty the containments of Kabwe's 79% population that is not connected to piped sewage, we are witnessing: 🚽 regular access to low-cost, easily accessible onsite sanitation services, because the right to a dignified life must be enjoyed by all people. 💼 better work conditions for #SanitationWorkers; the initiative fosters a regular flow of projects and reliable incomes for workers. 💰 increased financing for operations and maintenance, which is vital for the longevity and functionality of the services. Further, as many more containments are emptied in a timely manner, stakeholders expect reduced sludge spillage into the living environment and contamination of water sources. Learn more about this incredible work by watching the full video here: 📽️ http://on.snv.org/46fPXwM This is what #UrbanResilience look like. PREPARING FOR THE RAIN- Water for productive use! Two weeks ago - on ZNBC, I talked about rain harvesting- in support of Zambia Water Investment Programme and the President's call for rain harvesting. We at Africa Access Water with our partner Tevel are putting words into action! We believe that water for productive use is a stimulant to economic development. This year we are walking the talk. Yesterday, I inspected progress on the construction of a water reservoir/dam and a fish pond at our Mphande Community Project Farm in Kafue District. Anticipating a harvest of 35-40million litres, we aim to boost or increase vegetable production, house incomes and improve livelihoods of the targeted community. #rainhaversting #solarpoweredwater4productiveuse

"Thank you, Legacy Collective community, for entrusting the Ugandan Water Project with a grant of $32,000 so we can provide borehole well upgrades to 16 rural Ugandan communities through our AquaTrust program. So far we have upgraded 4 borehole wells and now, 555 people (100 households) are benefiting from safe, sustainably managed water! One of the communities that has been transformed because of this grant is Kyakula. Members of the Kyakula community had been struggling for over 6 months with a broken borehole well. Without a functioning water source, community members were forced to fetch water from a surface water swamp, that was also used by cattle, or walk to the closest working borehole well, nearly 2 hours away. Thanks to the grant from Legacy Collective, this community of approximately 100 people (20 households) now has access to safe, sustainably managed water. Check out your impact in Kyakula by clicking on your digital impact report link: https://lnkd.in/gFB2sGSZ 0dff4 Check out your impact in Uganda so far by clicking on your digital impact dashboard link: https://lnkd.in/gcCuZDxw 128" –Ugandan Water Project #economicdevelopment #support #safewater #systemicissues #givingcircles #grants #impact

Nestled in the southwest of Kenya, Kisii County is a fruitful region that is known for its agricultural excellence 🍌🥑🌽🥛 lush foliage emerald hills, lush farmlands, and abundant vegetation . 🌳🌲 Kisii County's apparently abundant resources are put to the test by a serious water deficit that exists beneath the lovely surface. Like many regions in Kenya, the county is facing a critical shortage of clean and accessible water. This crisis impacts families, schools, healthcare facilities, and local businesses, hindering progress and development. 🤝🌍 The impact of this crisis cannot be understated. The community relying on water for their livelihoods, is struggling to sustain their crops. Families have been forced to ration their water usage, compromising their basic needs. And the ecosystem, which thrives on a delicate balance, is being disrupted by this scarcity. 🌍 The residents are strong and committed to finding answers in the face of this water catastrophe. They understand the value of protecting their surroundings and making sure that water resources are managed responsibly. This presents Kisii County with more than simply a challenge—it presents a chance for expansion, advancement, and a better future. 🌿💧 By working together, we can ensure that everyone has access to safe water. 💪🌱 #WaterCrisis #CommunityAction #SustainableSolutions #CommunityResilience #Resilience

Acacia Water and Food for the Hungry have partnered to implement the 3R program in Wama and Jaldesa WRUA, Marsabit County, Kenya. The program aims to improve access to safe and sustainably managed water and rangelands. Through community participation, gabion check dams and soil and stone bunds were implemented. This is an approach which will contribute to the start of ground water recharge (Ela which called in Borana: shallow wells) through interventions The Borana community's impressive participation and self-motivation were key to the program's success. #Kenya #watermanagement #sustainability

#ProjectMonday | Last year, we joined forces with the World Water Quality to bring safe water access to the informal community of Kibera, Kenya. Together, we installed twenty bucket filters around Kibera's Saran'gombe Ward, targeting community gathering points such as schools and food markets to reach as many people as possible. The filters are a much-needed access point in a community where nearly two million people live without access to any local water systems. Kibera, sometimes known as Africa's largest slum, is an informal settlement around the Nairobi River. The river is heavily polluted, exposing community members to dangerous pathogens. Without widespread access to water filters, waterborne diseases are a massive problem in the community. This year, we're making it our mission to expand our water filter initiative across all of Kibera, ensuring reliable clean water access and protection from waterborne diseases for the whole community. Through safe water access, we can improve the lives of thousands of people in Kibera. #safewaterforall #water #safewater #waterislife

As of 2021, less than 30% of Zimbabweans had access to clean water. In Bulawayo, the second largest city in Zimbabwe, water treatment plants produce 127 megalitres per day, falling short of the 150 megalitre daily demand. Boreholes help bridge the gap but lack proper chlorination. The city generates 53 megalitres of wastewater daily, but treatment plants can only handle 32, leading to improper discharge. In response, the Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA), a +1 WASH awardee, was formed. BPRA facilitates dialogue between residents and authorities to address water, sanitation, and hygiene needs, such as water testing for typhoid and advocating for toilet construction. BPRA's work is crucial for advancing WASH goals in Zimbabwe, and we are proud to partner with them to improve WASH practices and meet community needs. #WASH #GlobalFundForWASH #AccessToCleanWater

In Liberia, many people don't have toilets, so they go outside to do their business. Sadly, this is true for about 38% of the population. What's worse is that there are no proper places to treat waste, like sewage or poop. Without these facilities, it's hard to keep things clean and safe. We need to act fast to fix this problem and make sure everyone in Liberia can use clean toilets and live in a healthy environment. #CWSA #C4HLiberia #WASHGovernance
