3 Golden Nuggets in Learning and Development Disruption

LinkedIn Learning released its first livestream featuring a mind blowing conversation among LinkedIn Learning's Amy Borsetti and Service Titan's Naphtali Bryant and Jason Mulero. What a treat!

Naphtali and Jason shared golden nuggets galore and I would like to highlight 3 of these here:

1.Learning and Development (L&D) in the past was about managing learning. Now, L&D empowers the process by being an advisor and curator of content, by finding scalable learning technology that can support business needs. They noted "We don’t have the time to build programs now." They also spoke about activating learning influencers (learning champions) throughout the organization.

2. Figure out identity and determine strategy for the L&D team. Naphtali and Jason share that before the L&D transformation they drove at the company, “we were about filling seats” at their training classes. That changed drastically. They drew inspiration from their company CEO, who has said “I want people to have their best years of their careers here.” Building on this, the L&D team established its tagline as "Engage, learn, achieve" and set their strategy based on their learners. With that, they established a strategy along the lines of:

We want all staff to …

We want managers to …

We want directors and above to …

3. Focus on 5 partnerships across the business: with senior leaders, people managers, finance, marketing, and talent acquisition. And, of those, focus on your relationship with managers because they play a crucial role in learning. Show love to your managers, they said. Focus on manager enablement by providing resources to do their job well to help you be the manager you want to be. Help them achieve some of their quick wins. Help them build their own leadership brand by inviting them to co-facilitate workshops and through other means. They also host "Manager motivational minutes" to share great things managers are doing.

I agree..... in this VUCA environment L&D cannot afford to be about managing learning or "filling seats at training sessions", more is required and expected for L&D to keep the lead as the disruptions keep coming!
