While it's easy to get swept up in the possibilities of 2024, the year's end is also a natural time for reflection.
And what a year it was! A lot happened in 2023, but we've narrowed it all down to a list of the most noteworthy milestones in China's digital economy and at Alibaba Group, from the biggest restructuring in Alibaba's history to a revival in live entertainment post-pandemic.
With these experiences in hand, Alibaba Group is ready for 2024.
After Joe Tsai and Eddie Wu stepped into the roles of Alibaba Group's Chairman and CEO, respectively, in September, Wu also took on the mantle of Taobao and Tmall Group's CEO in late December.
And finally, shoutout to navigation platform Amap, which scaled new heights in 2023, accumulating 280 million peak daily active users at one point. Alibaba Cloud is also on top of its game and has been hard at work training many new large language models.

The group’s research institute designed two large language models to reflect Southeast Asia’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape.
Most LLMs originate from western countries and are trained on datasets based disproportionately on languages derived from English and Latin. Not so with DAMO Academy’s SeaLLM and SeaLLM-chat, which can process languages from Burmese to Khmer.
