Music's Impact in Healthcare: Insights from a Patient Survey

Believe it or not, music plays a powerful role in shaping our experiences, including in medical waiting rooms. A recent survey by Tebra offers fascinating insights into the relationship between music, emotions, and healthcare habits.

  • Patients' Preferred Waiting Room Tunes: From classics like Journey's "Don't Stop Believin,'" to soothing melodies of classical music, the survey reveals how music can shape our mood during anxious moments. Surprisingly, while classical music is known for relaxation, it's also associated with longer wait times and increased pain perception.
  • Topping the Waiting Room Charts: Analyzing Spotify playlists with “waiting room” in the title, we discovered the most-played songs in medical waiting rooms. Taylor Swift, The Beatles, and Maroon 5 dominate the playlist, suggesting a preference for familiar, comforting tunes.
  • Playlists and the Patient Experience: Patients lean towards serene genres like jazz, lo-fi, and classical, while metal, hip-hop, and rap are less favored due to their intensity. Understanding these preferences can tailor waiting room experiences to alleviate stress.
  • Health Habits and Music Preferences: To conclude our study, we were curious how music preferences might also correlate with health habits. We found that country music fans stood out as the healthiest group, while metal fans were the least likely to visit the doctor. These findings hint at music's potential to influence behavior beyond just mood.

In conclusion, music may have the power to be more than just entertaining – it might even encourage a better healthcare experience, both in and out of the waiting room. Together, we can orchestrate an environment that fosters well-being and positive outcomes.
