In this edition of the newsletter, we focus on the incredible story of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and how their unwavering commitment to community and generosity has made a profound impact over the past 25 years.

Celebrating 25 Years of Impact: The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians' Annual Golf Tournament

Last night, I had the honor of attending an event that truly embodies community, generosity, and the human spirit: the 25th Annual Fundraising Golf Tournament hosted by the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. This event has grown over the years, and this year it had to be held over four days in three different locations – Torrey Pines, Pelican Hill, and Monarch Beach Golf Course – to accommodate nearly 1,000 golfers who all came out to give back and be a part of this important mission. The camaraderie and shared purpose were evident throughout the event.

But this was more than just a golf tournament. It was a testament to the power of collective effort and the incredible impact it can have. This year, the event raised over $480,000, which was distributed to eight remarkable non-profit organizations. These organizations are on the front lines every day, working to improve the lives of so many people in our communities. The tournament culminated in a heartfelt dinner where contributions were presented to these deserving groups, highlighting the importance of recognizing and supporting their tireless efforts.

Reflecting on the past 25 years, it's inspiring to see the journey of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. From very humble beginnings, living in adobe HUD housing with outhouses and dirt roads, they have become one of the largest employers in California. Their determination for self-reliance and appreciation for the community that supported them has driven them to where they are today. Beyond the annual golf tournament, their charitable contributions have given away hundreds of millions of dollars, helping people all over the world.

A Lesson in Resilience and Generosity

This event serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people come together with a shared vision. The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians' commitment to philanthropy and community service is inspiring. Their story is a beacon of hope, showing that no matter where we start, we can all make a significant impact on the world around us.

Historically, Native Americans have faced immense challenges. They were once destitute, driven off their lands, and had bounties placed on their heads by the state. Today, they stand as proud community leaders, building bridges and creating opportunities for everyone. The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians' journey from oppression to leadership exemplifies resilience and the importance of giving back.

It's important to note that this spirit of community and giving back has not been an accident. Every member of the tribe and its tribal government has made a deliberate decision to give back and help build bridges across communities so that everyone benefits. This intentional approach ensures that as they do well, they help others by creating new opportunities and experiences that can be shared. The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians is a model community, deserving recognition, and one of thousands of untold stories of resilience and generosity.

Gratitude and Inspiration

I want to extend my deepest gratitude to those present representing San Manuel: Chairwoman Lynn Valbuena, Audrey Martinez, Vice-Chair Johnny Hernandez, Joe Maarango, Edward Duro, and the entire tribe for their unwavering dedication and inspirational leadership. Their example teaches us invaluable lessons about community, generosity, and the importance of lifting each other up.

As lifelong students of life, we should all take a moment to learn from such exemplary acts of kindness and leadership. Together, we can make a difference.
