Today’s People Spotlight features Eirini Kolyvaki, a senior engineer from our Water business in Scotland. Eirini was a research assistant in Greece for two years before she decided to pursue a new career path. Seeking to broaden her horizons, she moved to the United Kingdom and entered the construction industry, working in the building sector before joining AECOM. During her nine years with us, she has played a key role in Scottish Water’s Caledonia Water Alliance. It’s given her the opportunity to contribute to major projects like Bertha Park, which will supply clean water to 3,000 new homes and businesses in Perth, Scotland. “For every project I have worked on, there has always been a focus on respecting and engaging with communities by minimizing disturbance, investing in local suppliers and reducing carbon emissions,” she writes. “On the Bertha Park project, we incorporated sustainable materials into the design to help create a positive impact on local communities and the environment.” Read more about her work: https://lnkd.in/es8eh643 #AECOM #AECOMVoices

Llanfair Talhaiarn, a Welsh village at the confluence of the Nant Barrog watercourse and River Elwy, faced severe flooding during Storm Ciara in 2020, affecting 40 homes. To address this, Cyfoeth Naturiol Cymru / Natural Resources Wales appointed AECOM to develop a comprehensive flood risk management scheme. Designed to protect against severe, once-in-a-century floods (1% AEP), the scheme used advanced hydrological and hydraulic modelling to inform the civil design. Key infrastructure improvements included replacing a deteriorated 40-metre brick arch culvert with a reinforced concrete bridge, constructing 75 meters of flood walls, and installing a highway drainage system with non-return valves. Environmental enhancements included restoring habitats for migrating fish, eels, and otters, removing weirs, installing an otter pass, and fitting a vegetated retaining wall. During Storm Babet in October 2023, the new steel trash screen blocked 150 tonnes of debris, effectively protecting the village. Have you ever wondered what it's like to be an early career professional at AECOM? We spoke to Harriet Ridler, a Coastal Engineer at AECOM, to share her journey and experiences. From a young age, growing up in Dawlish, a coastal town in England, she saw firsthand the vital role that infrastructure plays. Her love for coastal engineering was sparked by the collapse of the town's seawall caused by a powerful storm ten years ago, which disrupted her daily life. Three years into her role, she is now heavily involved in the Langstone Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) project. This project aims to provide enhanced resilience against tidal flooding for the village of Langstone and A3023, the only road on and off Hayling Island by 2026/7. Harriet also had the opportunity to engage and share her experience with university students during the Flood and Coast 2024 in the Early Careers Zone which AECOM sponsored.
