For too long, conservation efforts have favored Western knowledge over Indigenous knowledge, despite our Peoples being stewards of land, waters, and wildlife since time immemorial. 🌡 Climate change could undermine the effectiveness of current efforts to conserve wildlife and ecosystems. 🔥 For example, future climate-caused natural disasters like floods and wildfires might literally cause conservation efforts to go up in smoke. Because of this, there is a need for intentional, strategic, and forward-looking adjustments to: ☑️WHAT kinds of actions are being implemented ☑️WHERE actions are located ☑️WHEN actions are needed ☑️WHY these actions are being implemented 📄 The Embracing Change report offers real-world examples of how conservation practitioners are already beginning to modify the WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, and WHY of their efforts: https://lnkd.in/egDF4nWV

Climate adaptation projects are like regular conservation projects with one difference: they adjust their strategy to meet future climate projections. 📈 By taking future climate conditions into account, these projects ensure that their conservation outcomes will last well into the future. ⏰ In one example, The Nature Conservancy Oregon observed that conditions were becoming drier and non-native grasses were overtaking native grass species. The non-native grasses burned more rapidly and in drier conditions, leading to increased #wildfires 🔥. To help the native species thrive, the project team planted seeds with herbicide protection pods (HPPs), which gave extra protection to the native grass seed and neutralized herbicides. This allowed the native grasses to thrive and stop the continuous cycle of fires due to #climatechange. 🌱 What are other examples of how projects have adjusted their work due to climate change? The Northwestern #Hawaiian Islands are home to 97% of the GLOBAL population of black-footed albatrosses, Bonin petrels and Tristam's storm petrels. 🏝🐦 Climate change could lead to permanent loss of these #seabird populations, as sea level rise threatens to overtake the islands. Pacific Rim Conservation is working to relocate baby seabirds to higher elevation islands, establishing a cycle in which the babies will return to the same island to build their own nests one day. 🌊 🐣 Pacific Rim is also sharing best practices, identifying species and locations where seabird translocation is a viable solution, and working with government agencies on permitting of these projects.
