In its 8th edition the GEOLAC, Geothermal Congress for Latin America and the Caribbean once again brings together the key stakeholders of the sector in a growth region of the industry.

GEOLAC 2021 is living up to its billing as the meeting place for the Latin American and Caribbean geothermal market. Two weeks before the event convenes virtually, all the major developers, all of the funding agencies, and most of the region’s governments are already confirmed to attend.

The event arrives at a critical time for the industry – and for the region. What role can geothermal play in re-activating Latin American and Caribbean economies post-Covid and how can it help the region respond to the need to decarbonize? Are there emerging opportunities for geothermal to power (and heat) the extractives, industrial and agricultural sectors? Can geothermal help propel green hydrogen across the region into the big time?

Co-hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), The World Bank and ESMAP, GEOLAC will address the challenges facing the industry, showcase national projects and initiatives, and explore opportunities for new partnerships and programs to drive the industry forward. Ultimately GEOLAC will serve to accelerate the development of world-class geothermal projects across Latin America and the Caribbean.

The event is split into two parts, a two-day conference element with in-depth conversations conversations with key leaders from national administration and industry leaders, project showcases, cross-industry panel discussions and live debates, and a regional Government Geothermal Showcase hosted by the Inter-American Development Bank. In addition, the annual Technical Assistance Forum (TAF) hosted by the Geothermal Development Facility for Latin America (GDF) will be focusing on how the DFIs can help accelerate the development of geothermal.
