Yesterday's camera roll - a community receiving access to clean water for the first time ever in Kabwe, #Zambia. A collaborative approach between Makor Resources and Jubilee Metals Group. This is what scaled impact with others looks like.

“Nothing about you, without you.” - the driving force behind WHY we moved to #Zambia 10 days ago. In other words, inclusive and authentic #meaningfulengagement. I’ve read A LOT of reports. I’ve conducted a significant number of Community Baseline and Needs Assessments, facilitated group discussions and gathered a shocking amount of research and #data. It’s great for context. It informs you. AND it’s insufficient, adversely influencing what we know as truth. ➡ It makes the most pressing social concerns about quantitative data, missing information about the realities on the ground. ➡ It impersonalizes the human being, becoming a statistic and consequently insecure about their capacity to own and steer their own future. ➡ And it’s historically had the industry engage with communities in a way that is paternalistic - ‘we own the truth, we know what you need, we know what's right/wrong according to "standard".' And often treated as separate from the productivity component of #mining or as #charity. Sadly, #communityengagement often becomes tokenistic to check a box- if a community cannot define and clearly state how input can impact a decision that is TOKENISTIC - that is sharing information not engagement. A survey is not engagement. A meeting doesn’t mean engagement. Even previously implemented initiatives with profound systemic impact DOESN’T MEAN ENGAGEMENT. Together with Jubilee Metals Group PLC we are redefining meaningful engagement. Many of you asked, and here's my first 10 days in Zambia: ➡ GETTING OUT IN THE FIELD on a continuous basis, from the top-down. Respecting, valuing and taking the time to understand local traditions, customs and knowledge. ➡ #STAKEHOLDER MAPPING to understand their interests, concerns, and power dynamics to tailor engagement strategies accordingly. ➡ EARLY ENGAGEMENT from the most preliminary stages of project planning to integrate community stakeholder feedback into #projectdesign and establish shared alignment on what needs to happen and who's doing what. ➡ VISIONING SESSIONS AND #ACTIONPLANS with all community stakeholders to co-create a shared future, including communities in the decisions that affect their lives and empowers them to become active participants in all programming to lead the ongoing #development. We are just starting to build the foundation of a much broader approach. Building capabilities and expertise to target fit-for-purpose engagement with communities is a challenge for the industry, but it must be a pillar of good corporate strategy. As we strive towards responsible #resourcedevelopment and #sharedvalue with host communities and countries, the QUESTION REMAINS: “How can we ensure that #communityengagement processes prioritize the voices and priorities of ALL community stakeholders and members, fostering equitable and sustainable outcomes for present and future generations?" Curious on your thoughts? 💬👇 #responsiblemining #mining #CSR #SDG #ESG #ASM

In just a few words… it's a BIG move with BIG expectations. 📣 📣📣 We are MOVING to #Zambia for some time! 5 years ago we made a commitment when launching Makor Resources - to do things differently. Think a new.  Innovate a new. Challenge conventional industry norms. We quite literally wanted to redefine mining, to make it matter, and to serve the world. Our driving force was the quest for a #sustainablefuture FOR ALL (in it’s many different facets). It wasn’t a matter of ambition but necessity. We also recognized that as efforts to transition to a #cleaneconomy intensify, so does the demand for #criticalmetals, projecting growth of nearly 500% by 2050, according to The World Bank. The world WILL grapple with insufficient exploration and critical mineral shortages and we recognized the key role that artisanal and small-scale #ASM miners could play in addressing that gap, and in the #futureofmining. ⬆ THAT BECAME OUR FOCUS. Our strategy hinged on 3 pillars - Mining , Marketing, and Making. 1️⃣ #MINING (redefining mining) — To mine responsibly and become the lowest carbon footprint critical metals supplier in the world. #boldstatement 2️⃣ #MARKETING (making it matter) — To combine #IoT and #blockchain to trace a bulk material from source, then liaise with downstream stakeholders in order for them to have proof of provenance where minerals are sourced, and to know how minerals are sourced, sold and then manufactured into the final product that are seen on Main Streets across the globe. #minetomainstreet   3️⃣ #MAKING (serving the world) — To develop citizen-led and localized initiatives that advance the SDGs by forging sustainable solutions to address systemic social, health and environmental challenges in ASM mining communities. All that sat on the foundation to de-risk investment into the ASM sector. It was so clear what needed to be done. The only real question we had to confront was around DO-ABILITY - “can we REALLY do this?” Well… 5 years later, and with many stories to be shared, I can yes this: YES. We can do it.  ☑ We have been doing it. ☑ We will continue to do it. ☑ But we also learned that to REALLY do it - to really produce a different outcome in terms of #regulation and #policy frameworks, systemic sustainable development, true adoption of transparent #supplychains then we had to get on the ground with our teams, with the small-scale miners we are working with and with the community. I suppose we could continue to sit in an office. Pontificate. Strategize. Implement. Fly in and fly out when needed. Meet with communities and government officials on occasion. Always a few steps removed. All that is important for shareholders. But in my experience, it’s also insufficient because it’s simply not enough to deliver on the commitment we made 5 years ago: to redefine mining, to make it matter, and to serve the world. So, here we go Ricus Grimbeek. Like I said, BIG move with BIG expectations. #nextchapter

So, what is the best way to develop your career in the #mining industry? I have worked in the largest companies in the industry - in technical, functional and operational roles. I worked as a miner through to being a CEO. I’ve worked in many places around the world, in all areas of the business, and in many different commodities. I have also worked in the smaller and midcap sector, and I’ve supported service providers to the industry. And most recently, a co-Founder of a #startup (Makor Resources) in the industry. So, if I had to give advice to someone entering the #industry , here is what it would be ….(and please note that it is not fact just my opinion): 1. Find out what you are #passionate about AND what difference you want to make to the world. I know it sounds a bit cliché but after spending 34 years in the industry, I can promise you, the sooner you have clarity on that the better. 2. Start in a #small or #mid-cap size company first — mainly due to the fact it forces you early on in your career to learn the whole business in a short space of time. This also often gives you an abstract experience as you have to get out in the field and stay in the field. You very quickly learn how things are done, and without much support. This enables you to quickly learn for yourself what areas you’re most passionate about, and which areas you’re most skilled at. 3. Find ways to work in #technical, functional and #operational roles in the field for longer than you think is necessary. 4. Start building a #personal #brand from day one and get the right support to do that in a way that it is impactful. It’s important to find the perfect balance with how your brand aligns with your current role / company but also support the growth of your longer term vision (thanks Brooke Bibeault for your ongoing coaching and support here). 5. Go out and REALLY spend time in the #communities that are impacted by the mining/processing operations - learn to just listen so that you can understand the need and perceptions. BTW, this includes spending time with artisanal miners in your back yard. 6. Read a book a month - a suggestion would be to read a book one month on something that really interests you and alternate the next month on a topic you know nothing about. 7. Record all your #life #lessons so you can #storytell them later. Whether you’re a coach, an executive, a teammate, a parent.. telling these stories creates relatability and enrolls those around you in what you do each day. 8. Find a #coach - and a #mentor (very different things). 9. Mentor others - even if in the beginning it is to support younger communities member to find their #passion and #direction. Everyone needs someone to believe in them and you could very easily be that. 10. Be #nice to the people you work with as you work your way up the #corporate ladder because they are the ones that will catch you if you fall down one day.

Development is a long-term commitment and for #development to be truly #sustainable, communities must be at the source of leading and owning their own development. Our team is excited to be working alongside Jubilee Metals Group PLC in Zambia #communitymaking We have an inclusive model that builds and improves #sharedvalue, moving beyond just #philanthropy and #corporatesocialresponsibility. Rather, all stakeholders, especially host communities, become participants in the decisions that affect their lives. The last couple weeks have been dedicated to: surveying, focus group discussions, data collection from schools.. clinics.. #aid agencies.. Ministries, and needs assessments with the communities, with the traditional leaders, and with the government leaders. Collecting, analyzing, and UNDERSTANDING data at a systemic level is key. Too many community engagement forums don’t produce accurate or reliable information and communities are often fragmented and subject to the problem of self-appointed gatekeepers. We believe every voice matters and that everyone deserves a platform to be heard. Together with Jubilee Metals Group PLC, we aren't just developing FOR communities, we are developing WITH the communities. We are building solutions in partnership with the communities, ensuring the are active participants of all programming to lead the ongoing development. #communitymakingthroughmining #africa #community #CSR #mining #responsiblemining

We create in language and words are the building blocks of language. I love words and love studying the origin and meaning of words. A great example of this is the word MAKOR that we used for our company name - Makor Resources. Makor’s earliest meaning was “spring, fountain” and later it gained the more general meaning of “source” and “origin”. The root meaning in Hebrew means “to dig”. The Swedish meaning of Makor is the plural of Maka and it means “to move (slightly) a big, heavy or otherwise difficult-to-move object”. So there you have it - Makor Resources - to dig at the source in order to move a big, heavy difficult to move industry…. #Mining….as a #Service - in service of Small Scale and Artisanal miners, communities and ultimately, the world. We enable Artisanal and Small-Scale businesses in the raw materials value chain - from "Mine to Main Street", Production to Retail - to manage risks, build resilient sourcing strategies, capture value and invest for social impact to address some of today’s most pressing concerns. We #Mine, #Responsibly. We provide artisanal and small-scale miners access to the services that enable them to operate legally, improve safety and operational effectiveness, mine responsibly, and build diverse local economies by capturing a larger share of the value chain. In all our work we advocate for transparency, participation and inclusion, and design and implement processes that uphold these values. We have a highly specialized Exploration, Mine Design and Mine Operations team that uses the latest technology and best in class standards, and guidelines, to responsibly and effectively support Artisanal and Small-Scale mine owners to maximize and operate their assets. We #Market, Mine to #MainStreet. We drive consumer demand and responsible sourcing  by connecting end-users, large scale corporations and manufacturers with the millions of Artisanal and Small-Scale miners and the communities they operate within through a connected supply chain solution, “Mine to Main Street”. Our blockchain enabled tracking and tracing platform provides responsible trade facilitation and proof of provenance of every ton of material being produced to ensure transparency and improved margins for Mine Operators as well as Large-Scale mining partners. We #Make, #Communities. We develop citizen-led and localized initiatives that advance the #SDGs by forging sustainable solutions to critical social, health and environmental challenges in Artisanal and Small-Scale mining communities. We build solutions in partnership with the communities we operate within, ensuring that the communities are active participants of all programming to lead the ongoing development.
