The Outlier's special feature – A Perfect Storm: Durban Floods, climate change and coastal resilience – has won five major awards. This latest one from Covering Climate Now is particularly appreciated as we have been recognised along with some very serious global players. Congratulations again to the small, tight team that makes big things happen: Laura Grant Alastair Otter 📈 Leo Joubert Gemma Ritchie Gemma Gatticchi Tanya Pampalone
Here's a snapshot of some of the best reporting on extreme weather and its impacts, from the 2024 Covering Climate Now Journalism Awards. Stories in this category made clear the connection between weather disasters and human-caused climate change. Strong explanations of how climate factors into extreme weather — hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and extreme heat and cold, and more — as well as human-centered stories of disasters and their aftermath told with a climate lens, can help inform the public about the bigger picture. What happens in the weeks and months following a disaster? Journalists Jenipher Changwanda and Freddie Clayton poignantly document cascading tragedies that plagued a Malawi farm community after Cyclone Freddy crashed into the country in March 2023. The region’s food system collapsed, and there was the horrific uptick in sex trafficking, evidence of how climate disasters often weigh uniquely on women and children. Changwanda and Clayton round out their reporting with a smart exploration of solutions that could help mitigate this scale of harm in the future. For Yale Environment 360: https://lnkd.in/ewAPZwCr The Pelican State is home to scores of chemical plants which, for decades, have famously polluted surrounding communities. What will happen when increasingly destructive climate disasters come for those facilities? Tristan Baurick and Jeff Adelson revealed that hundreds of facilities are ill-prepared, and the toxic chemicals within are likely to leak out when disasters strike; in fact, using advanced data analytic and mapping techniques, they find that fully one-quarter of Louisiana’s population lives within one mile of such facilities in high-risk zones. Through impressive document work, the reporters show that Louisiana's government is doing little, if anything, to reduce risk, in particular for poorer and marginalized communities. For The Times-Picayune | Nola.com: https://lnkd.in/eRkVjQJJ In April 2022, floods and mudslides devastated the South African city of Durban, killing more than 440 people and displacing tens of thousands. With sharp and suspenseful writing and deft data work using those floods as a case study, The Outlier examines what went wrong and shares rare examples of preparation that helped some communities in the city fare better. The goal of the piece? To serve up, as climate disasters increase in severity and frequency worldwide, a blueprint for equitable resilience. How can societies prevent a replay of this tragedy? #OurWorldInCharts TeamSA @ the Olympics 🥇The Olympic medal table is based on golds, with silver and bronze as tie-breakers 🇿🇦 South Africa’s best gold medal performances were in 1912, 2012 🎨 Art medals were awarded for sport-inspired works from 1912-1948 At the Olympics, a country’s position on the medals table is based primarily on gold medals. Silver and bronze are used as tie-breakers. South Africa has won the most medals in athletics (28), followed by swimming (20) and boxing (19). South Africa has also won two art medals. These were won in competitions held between 1912 and 1948 to reward artistic works, such as poems or sculptures, that were ‘inspired by sport’. When measured in golds, South Africa’s two most-successful performances are a century apart. At the 1912 Games in Stockholm, South Africa won four golds and two silvers in tennis, cycling and the marathon. Tennis player Charles Winslow, one of SA’s most successful Olympians, won two of those gold medals. In London in 2012, Team SA won four golds in rowing, swimming, and athletics. South Africa’s highest medal haul was 10 at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, but only two were gold. 📊 For the full story and 6 more Olympics charts: https://lnkd.in/dRHPeM-K Tagging chief chart maker Alastair Otter 📈 #Olympics #MedalTable #GoldMedals #SouthAfrica #Athletics #Swimming #Boxing #ArtMedals #SportsHistory #TeamSA #OlympicHistory #OlympicStats #SportsData #DataViz #OurWorldInCharts South African Sports Confederation, Olympic and Paralympic Committee Department of Sport, Arts and Culture

#OurWorldInCharts This year's Olympics is the first where gender parity has been achieved – 124 years after women were first allowed to compete. Although the average Olympic team is evenly split between men and women, Africa has the lowest representation of women of all the continents, with women comprising only 44% of the average team. There are, however, notable exceptions. Countries such as Angola, Cameroon, Lesotho, Malawi, Nigeria, São Tomé and Príncipe, Sierra Leone and Zambia are sending teams where women make up two-thirds of the athletes. Guinea-Bissau and Somalia will have no female competitors in Paris. There was a spike in female participation at the Games in 1928, when women could compete in athletics and gymnastics. Since 1991, the Olympic Committee mandated that all new codes that apply for recognition must have female competitors. 👉 South Africa's road to the Paris2024 – Full story + 7 charts here: https://lnkd.in/dRHPeM-K #Paris2024 #Olympics #GenderParity #WomenInSports #Africa #FemaleAthletes #EqualityInSports #OlympicHistory #DiversityAndInclusion #SportsRepresentation #DataViz #DataInsights #OurWorldInCharts #OWIC #TheOutlier
